Your hen will be happy with a saddle to protect her from the damage caused by rooster claws and talons during mating. A rooster can cause broken and missing feathers that leave an uncomfortable bald patch on your hens back.

The chicken saddle is made from durable and waterproof leather, with wide elastic wing straps for comfort. It can be left on your hen at all times as either a preventative to feather damage or to allow re-growth of missing feathers.

Hi duckstar,

Yes the hens seem to cope well in the heat of summer with my saddles, just as well as though without saddles. My hens wear them right through Summer and we get up to a max of around 40 degrees, usually more around 30 though! We are located in Lake Macquarie NSW. As they are made out of a natural material (leather, which has all those tiny skin pores), they naturally breath.

Cheers
Michelle

Hi,
I am not familar with that breed, however the saddles are available in a range of sizes to suit even the smallest of bantams (eg Japanese), please find sizes below...

Sizes:

To determine the correct size for your hen, measure from the base of the neck down the back to the start of their tail. This is the back length. Then select the appropriate size below. If none of the below suit your hen, please convo me, I make to order for custom sizes.

Extra Large (XL): 21cm back length eg. Orphintons
Large (L): 18cm back length eg. Wyandottes
Medium (M): 16.5cm back length eg. Hybrids, Isa Browns
Small (S): 14cm back length eg. Arucanas, Sikies
Extra Small (XS): 11cm back length eg. Belgium Bantams, Japanese Bantams

All saddles come with fitting instructions.

If you feel that the above sizes are not right, please contact me with the back length measurement of your hens and I can custom make a size off the standard pattern.

Cheers

Michelle

Watchout for these saddles your fowl can get caught up on wire or even a branch and die. I have a mate that lost a turkey poult because she got caught up on wire and stressed on overheated and died

Hi Muckducz,

Thanks for your concern. Just like putting a coat on your dog or horse, there is always the possibility that it may catch on a fence or plant. With appropriate management any risk of the saddle catching can be minimized. We recommend that your chickens if wearing a saddle should be checked at least twice daily and be kept in an area with well maintained fencing, we don't recommend it for free ranging in shrubbery.
Cheers
Michelle
