Desperate for a peahen

Surely there must be a peahen for sale somewhere in Vic. I am in the unenviable position of having 2 mature males (1 white 1 blue, 'Lord Snowdon' and 'Sir Percival') and only one hen. I originally wanted a pied or white hen for 'Lord Snowdon' but I don't care if she is a pied or not anymore, just as long as I can let both my boys mate this year. I have made lots of phone calls, searched online, perused the Weekly Times, advertised in local paper, etc., but to no avail. Saw an ad in Trading Post, but for a pair and I certainly don't need another male. I have also advertised 2 juvenile Indian Blue peacocks for sale in the local (Geelong) paper, but it seems no one wants to buy boys. Help!

Hi Jan, I am having similar problems up here in S/E QLD. We have three boys and have found three hens after weeks of searching. We would like another hen for our free-roaming male but we are also having all sorts of trouble. A lady near us had just sold her three hen chicks but cannot sell the male. Good luck with your searching.

You story of Sir Percival has greatly inspired us to believe we too may actually get some chicks this year. We would feel better if we could actually pen the free-roaming male for the season but he is apparently a fairly old bird and far too wiley to even get close to the inside of a pen - even with the lure of the girls. He just sits outside, beside the wire, with them right beside him on the other side! He is from the same farm as our boys and turned up out of the blue from about one kilometre away. I have some friends at Malmsbury who have a farm - I will ask them if they know of anyone who may have a hen or two for you. Can't guarantee but can only try.

Thank you Helen for your response to my desperate plea for a peahen. I was beginning to wonder if any of the members were actually active on the Forum on a daily basis. Yes, our magnificent Sir Percival is quite territorial with his lady, 'Piper', and we were quite surprised when he decided to share her abode in the pen rather than remaining 'free range'. I can only keep trying to find a mate for 'Lord Snowdon'. There must be one somewhere in Victoria! Malmsbury is "just up the highway", so I have my fingers crossed and my toes.

Hi Janb. I think you may have already contacted me re girls. We still have a pied hen for sale, $140, she is a very mature two this year. We also have a plain girl, $90, 2 this year. She has got heaps of white. Yours Pam, NE Vic

Pam, you are a lifesaver!! Poor Lord Snowden is sooooo lonely. Piper and Sir Percival are in the pen next to his and all he can do is look through the wire fence. We need to arrange a convenient day for us to come see you. I would be very interested in both the girls. When suits you weekdays or weekends?

Jan, I think I have emailed you privately, but I am not really savvy with how this greta website works. But anyway, raeding my reply it is so ungrammatical. The plain is plain and 2 years, and the pied has heaps of white and is 2. We are in Mansfield and I have broken ribs at present so you will need to bring an agile person. Pied is penned, but plain is not but I will see if I can get her in another pen somehow when I know when you are coming. It can be anytime as I am retired now. We also have a young male with white wing feathers whose Dad is a pied. Cheers, Pam

Last Thursday we travelled to Mansfield (Vic), about 4 hours from Geelong, to collect 2 lovely young peahens. They are about 2 years and quite large. They settled very quickly into their new home and set about showing Lord Snowdon that they are the boss!! He is extremely hen pecked (pun intended) but does still manage to display to them now and then. If you remember we bought the late Lady Penelope for him and also Princess Prunella who turned out to be a bit too young to co-habitate with his Lordship. So we are extremely relieved to now have mates for him. Having said that, I think I will have to move Miss Plain out of his enclosure and into Sir Percival's. Percy is more mature and won't, I don't think, put up with too much bossing about. I am thinking that Snow is a little bit too intimidated by the two of them to actually assert his manliness! Percy also has Piper with him and she is mature also. Many thanks to you Pam for your hospitality and the "girls".
