Hi Gazza, We received your Photos, and have placed them in the Forum Photo Gallery. They are great Photos to use for identifiying the sex of your Peafowl. We believe your Peafowl is infact a Peahen and by the markings (wing, back & Tail) and colour it may be a mature Peahen. The close-up Photos are great as they show the typical Peahen Markings and colour with no signs of the typical young Peacock markings.

What does everyone else think?????
Is Gazza in the market for a Peacock or Peahen????

Thanks
Peacocks Australia

Hi Gazza,
Great photo's --- I go along with PA -- you have a very pretty little girl there and by the look of her spurs I would say she is more than 3 years old. So now you have to find her a boyfriend :!: :!: :!: .

Good luck in your search and welcome to the forum.

Snowball :D :D :D

Hi again,

Thanks for the replies. I think she is pretty special and as I think I mentioned before I have been talking about getting a friend for her, but as I become more educated by this forum it appears I may need to look for another couple.

I am in the process of enlarging my old chook pen to accommodate their needs, so I am definitely looking for some new birds.

Living in Sydney, do you have a recommended supplier or advice? I would love to buy from PA, but the transport costs etc may not please the wife!

I want to do this the right way for the birds.

Thanks Gazza.

Buy the way how do you get the Emoticons into these messages. I have had no success.

Gazza, I had the same problem with emoticons when I first started but here's how you do it. As your typing and you are at a place where you want an emoticon place the cursor on the one you want and click :D :D the emoticon will appear after the last letter you typed.

Hope you can work that out, regards,

Snowball

I have to agree that looks like a really healthy IB peahen. She may start laying soon as it is the right season, I would keep my eyes peeled for a nest. Of course without a male they will be infertile but you can eat them! It sounds like you may have been bitten by the peafowl bug, I can see your place overrun with them in the near future, :).

Hi All,

It me again. Finally took the plunge and bought a pair of birds to keep my adopted peahen company. The pen took longer than expected to construct.

The peahen is your standard IB but the Cock bird is a beautiful pied. Both are mature and the old boy has a full tail at the moment showing off.

The day I brought them home the peahen that has taken up residence in our street didn't know what was going on. She immediately took an interest in her new friends and didn't take much prompting to get her to walk into the pen with them.

The boy is very tame and can be hand fed and you can handle it without any problem. The new girl is a little nervous.

I'm now ready to learn. I intend to pen them for six months as per your advice.

They have already laid two eggs which have basically been forgotten.

Will they breed while locked in a pen together? What are their needs etc? Do they need special food or nesting material? As I said this is all new to me.

I appreciate any advice.

Many Thanks Gazza.

Hi Gazza, Congrats on your new members of the family, to answer your questions. They can & should breed in the pen (subject to size?) but as you have just got them they need to settle in first and may not mate this season? Their diet should be as per our Article "Free Roaming Peacocks" and you will need to offer at least one brooding box per Peahen in the pen. You can make your own using Marine Ply (or similar)or you can use a large dog cage covered in 90% shade cloth. Dimensions approx 1200Lx 900W x 900H but bigger is ok with Hay on the floor. The brooding boxes MUST be in the shelter to protect them from Rain & Heat. We are currently writting an Article on " Peafowl - Penned v Free Roaming" this article is the result of a study we have conducted in co-juction with 5 other long term breeders, and breeders from the U.S.A the results may surprise some people and may help you in deciding on whether to keep them penned of free roaming.

Look forward to seeing some Photos of your extended Family!

Thanks
Peacocks Australia

Thanks PA.

Turkey Man,

I didn't buy these from a dealer. They were purchased from a family who were moving.

I am aware of a dealer at Oakville but I don't know were.

Sorry Gazza.
