Post subject:  TICKS - PEAFOWL

We live between Beenleigh and Logan Village in Queensland and noticed a couple of ticks just under the head/on the neck of our Gorgeous George (4 year old Peacock) early yesterday morning. We were rushing off to work and were hopeful that his peahens would groom him during the day and rid him of these nasties. Not to be unfortunately, by the time we arrived home at dusk he was down, head alert but when standing was trembling and very week. Not interested in his usual supper, water or mealworms. One tick left on his neck. We rang the vet immediately, wonderful fellow, pull the tick, catch GG and off to Logan Village for treatment pronto! You can imagine what a task that was! His train is almost 6foot long, weighs in at around 5kg, and not accustomed to being handled. Thank goodness the rain was light and after 7 or 8 attempts we caught him, wrapped him in a sheet, manoeuvred him into the back seat of the Prado on my lap. Break neck speed out to the vet! Neither the Receptionist nor the Vet quite expected what they met next! He was very well behaved though, was inspected thoroughly for more ticks and then withstood an injection under his wing into the vein… they even put him on the scales where he weighed in at 4.5 to 5kilos given his heavy tail feathers were nicely displayed on the floor behind him… Still weak this morning but not on his feet … trembles when standing… fingers crossed! We are hopeful that he will pull through... Just to warn all and sundry, the ticks are out and about and we are told... far worse than last year!

Hi Mandy have a read of this topic on Ticks viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14736 you will see its not that bad if you catch them early and no vet needed. Yours will recover it will just take a few days.

Thank you ever so much for your response. I have read the article as advised.

That is certainly wonderful advice, so wished I had read it earlier. Fingers crossed all will be ok then, gives me so much more hope.

Thank you.

Kindest regards,
Mandy

I'm not so sure Gorgeous George would have survived without the antitoxin, he was extremely weak and trembling badly. Only wish we had spotted the ticks earlier than we did, then there may have been no need. All good now though.

The vet was absolutely wonderful. He said that the native animals are immune to these ticks etc. and that when they come upon our property to eat the sweeter grass at home that they can't find in the forest the ticks fall off them and on to our lawns, hence our pets are easy game.

So we have a choice, rid ourselves of our lovely natives (wallabies, possums, koalas etc. ) or spray to rid ourselves of the ticks... not a hard choice that one! Thanks all for your assistance... lessons well learnt! So lovely to have our little family back to good health...

Yep he would have survived I have heard of a peacock that was completely paralyzed and could not move and 48 hours after removing the tick he could stand up 5 days he was walking again and no antitoxin was given.

Georges advice is good viewtopic.php?f=2&t=14736

Its only a temporary issue if you get them off quickly they do recover quickly with just a little TLC

Administering antitoxin definitely improves their chances of survival.

It is true that if caught early and before clinical signs are too advanced that tick removal may be enough.

However, I have had several dead birds in the freezer to prove that this is not always the case!

It is dangerous to make sweeping statements because every envenomation is different and there is no way to tell how serious each case will be.

Once they are unable to walk it may be too late.
