Late or early? Or just confused ?

Strangest thing... I found a Peahen on 4 fresh pea-eggs last night . New eggs ,new Nest , and a Clucky peahen . :-?

I have put a cage over her to protect her .I want to check the eggs for fertility but I'll giver her a week or so. I know that Stormboy our big white male has been Roosting just above her new nest, and they have been spending a lot of time together . We did have some late hatches but this is dragging it out a bit compared to our previous hatches. It is really cooling down fast here and all the rest have well and truly stopped laying .What do you think?

Hi Ian. I will watch this space with interest! Has the white boy still got his tail??? Or growing a new one???? Cos you are so much warmer than us I wouldn't be surprised what happens!!! What a coup if you hatched out some now!!!!! Ours are all definitely platonic at present except for the very young boys who spend a lot of time displaying and mating with the mother and with their siblings!!!!! Big surges of tesosterone and they are only 7 months old!!!

I got 3 eggs between april 20th and the 26th all are being sat on by a silky but I checked yesterday and 2 of them I could hear liquid inside them so I don't hold much hope

OK it's been 10 days ,I'm not game to candle them so I will do the whole waiting game , The Male had dropped his tail but still has a semi train , He and most of the other peafowl have been spending their days hanging around the pen I put over her , She is a good mum , so all it will really come down to now are the eggs .Interesting to see I'm not the only one getting late eggs . We do have funny weather at the moment cold nights warm days , but with the days being so much shorter now It will be surprizing if they are fertile , I honestly don't know when the eggs were layed as they are the master of disguise , but it is very close to my back shed where I would have noticed her and I think all the eggs looked very new as we had rain recently and they were very clean so I'll count down from the original post :-?

Craig McF uses a lentra Direct Light on a stalk. You can candle without moving them while she is off the eggs. No doubt you have one anyway. We bought one and it is beaut. Gosh, we will all be waiting with bated breath for the outcome. A friend's hen laid very late last year but they were infertile but he is in southern Vic. Let us knpw the birth results asap!!!!

Hi Ian, we have hatched eggs in late may 2008 and again in 2009 but it’s not that common. Is she a young hen? Good luck with the eggs

Thanks guys she is one of my original split whites for marg so she has a bit of age on her , I still use a torch and dunny roll for candling :oops:

so I'll have to wait , I do plan on getting something more modern.... one day . :mrgreen:

Well as expected all 4 were duds

, I should have at least gave mum some Chook eggs to hatch or something , At least now I know if I get a late , late , sitter ever again I know to swap eggs . She was a determined mum Though , I have banded her as a potential hatcher for the whites . Thanks for showing an interest
