Best advice I have been given so far is to see if I have any regular human antibiotics, and just give them that.

The local vet assured me that they will have stronger prescription only meds available that they will administer for all 3 chooks, but I will have to bring the sick one in. They only want $40 for a consultation which is a lot better than $70 so I am going to do that.

Then I will order some oxymav and keep it here in case they ever get sick again.

(And by best advice, I mean "most interesting" lol). I did call the person I bought the hen from, and she pretty much said sorry, it can happen, its quite common, good luck with the others. She also said that Oxymav doesnt do anything and isnt worth getting. Not sure how true that is, but when I do replace the chook, I wont be replacing it from her.

Thanks, H&H :D We wont be getting another chook for at least 8w so I have plenty of time to figure it out.

I took Bagee to the local vet up the road and she has an upper respiratory infection that has not developed in her chest. She did sound worse than yesterday so I am glad I got her medicine sorted out. The vet said that the Oxymav would have been fine if I'd been able to get my hands on it, so I will keep looking for it. Neither of the RIRs are sneezing but they are getting treated anyway. Its a bit annoying that the cost of the vets was double what I paid for her in the first place, plus a bit more - but I am glad she'll get better :) Its quite warm today, so I cleaned out their water bowls and when I gave them their bright yellow medicated water, all 3 of them had big long drinks, which is fantastic.

In other news, I met a guy up the road who has chooks. He is breaking our 4-chook, no rooster council rule by having 6 chooks and one rooster lol. It seems no one is content with the 4 chook rule around here

There was a petition going at one stage about this ridiculous 4 chook limit. Permits to keep more than 4 chooks and roosters cost $140, the shire aren't going to change back to the 20 chook limit now are they???

Best wishes for Bagee's speedy recovery. Keep an eye on her in the heat.

Ring your vet and tell her or him to order in some Oxymav 100, when you get it administer it directly via a syringe, down your birds throat (back of throat, if you look down the birds throat you will see two tubes , the front one is it's airway, no go zone).Your birds will be suffering from dehydration, hence the need for direct action, once they start to pick up then they should be able to drink medicated water without assistance.

Yes thats the one LooLoo, thanks :)

Purefeather the vets have a stronger version of the same stuff so I doubt they will order anything in like that. If I remember right, its not going to be made anymore but there is something similar available (though the Oxymav is still around).

When we left for our overnight trip, all the girls were eating and drinking as far as I knew, and the Light Sussex that started sneezing after the other died has been eating and drinking with no problems.

We have been giving them their medicated bright yellow water for a few days now and it all seems to be going well :)
