Egg pecking

Hi ,
Does anyone know how to i can stop my leghorn from pecking her egg after she has laid it, she has only just started laying so I want to stop it asap [smilie=a_rolling.gif]

A couple of questions, Neats2011, is she eating the eggs and are or were they soft shelled eggs.
Last night I did a little experiment and did a search on the forum regarding egg eating,of 32 replies only 3 were relevent to your query, still 3 is better than none.
If your chook is eating hard shelled eggs, grab an egg, blow it and fill it with mustard,chilli paste etc. if she pecks that little number it might make her think twice about eggs for brekky

She is only just pecking the shell , and it hasnt gone throught the membrane at all, and they are hard shelled eggs. Thanks for the tip, I hope she doesnt like chilli too

Try to collect the eggs as soon as possible after she has laid them. Does she have access to shell grit, free range and good quality pellets or scratch mix (layer mash) green food etc? If you watch her laying behaviour does she get up straight away from laying and cackle or does she linger in the box? How do you know it is this particular hen pecking the eggs and not another one?

In answer to your q's : She gets all the trimmings re food excepts for shell grit which we will invest in soon, and as far as I know its only the second egg she has laid, and I have seen her go on and lay and she seems to get off the nest pretty quickly after. I held up the pecked egg to her and he would have pecked it again had I let her, none of the other eggs I collect have ever been pecked. Her egg is larger than the others that lay, so these factors are what makes me think it is her. She doesn't cackle .

You can also try a golf ball in the nest you take the egg away as soon as possible and replace it with the golf ball
