Can chickens get ticks

Can chickens get ticks and do they do the same thing as with dog and cat and paralyze them first. If they can what can I use to kill them and stop them getting on in the first place?

It is difficult to prevent paralysis ticks from infecting chickens if you live in a paralysis tick area; you can try spraying frontline spray on them but nothing is proven as a tick preventative in chickens. All you can do is keep a close eye on them and if ticks are a real problem in your area you may have to confine the birds to a pen or yard from which most of the brush and long grass has been removed, and where native animals which carry the ticks cannot enter.

The pdf that PP has posted is a good general poultry care info sheet but does not deal with paralysis ticks since the article is from WA where tick paralysis does not occur.

Yes chickens can get tick paralysis and just appear to lie on the ground unable to move. If you remove the tick and with supportive care many will recover. Treating them with tick serum also seems to help if you are prepared to take them to the vet. However, many birds appear to develop a level of immunity but this varies.
