Messy vent help

I just gave my girls sardines for the first time and they went nuts for them. They were the home brand in oil kind - I drained off the oil when I opened the can.

Food- no; Eclectus parrots have a very high requirement for vitamin A & need lots of fresh fruit and vegies in their diet & not too many sunflower seeds. Parrots pellets and chicken pellets are quite different in their nutritional composition.

Having said that most of the extras you give can be eaten by both.

The worming mixtures are usually quite similar, especially if using them in the drinking water. Just don't waste your time using a piperazine-based wormer as it won't work well in your Eclectus.

The vitamin supplements are also similar. Some mineral supplements made specifically for poultry may be too high in some minerals -eg calcium-for an Eclectus. But if you only use them periodically there shouldn't be any problems.

Coles homebrand sardines in oil are only .68c, sardines in springwater are fine just more eggspensive. I give a tin once a week especially at this time of year. I only have 2 hens and they go through the tin.

The yoghurt and garlic once or twice a week, they love it in summer it's like ice cream for them. The apple cider vinegar in water also once or twice a week.

I read somewhere not to house parrots and poultry together for biosecurity reasons. Maybe some one else can enlighten you on this.

If your hen is still straining to pass her droppings there may either be a partial blockage of the gut eg fibre impaction OR irritation of the cloaca/rectum OR reproductive disease such as egg yolk peritonitis (EYP).

Does she feel soft and swollen at the back end? Has she stopped laying for some time?If so, then EYP is most likely. Outlook- not flash

If she is just passing lots of small droppings, it may be a partial obstruction. Sometimes these can be moved by giving them paraffin liquid by stomach tube twice daily for several days. Any history of eating long rank grass? String?

Do her droppings smell any worse than usual? Are they loose or formed? Do they have a good amount of green/black/brown (faeces) or are they motly white? These may indicate a gut irritation.

read through that, sounds a bit like my chicken, Caramel, who died recently...
she had poo running down her bum, almost no feathers, and looked quite sick... it can't be worms, as I had wormed her properly twice... how long does worm mediceine take to get in full affect by the way? I was confuzzled with her, didn't know what to do...
but I can't give any advice, as I wasn't successful at bringing her back

Basically, different species of birds tend to carry different diseases. When you mix species there is a risk thjet they will be exposed to each other's diseases to which they may have little immunity.

In this case, parrots often harbour chlamydia (psittacosis). In chickens this tends to present as a nasty conjunctivitis.

Conversely, chickens often carry mycoplasmas which can cause nasty respiratory diseases in parrots. Salmonella carrying chickens can be lethal to naive parrots.

Although birdkeepers commonly mix species, it is still good to be aware of the potential pitfalls of doing so.
