Livamol - Has anyone used it?

What are is the poor chook's malady?

I read the fact sheet on Livamol which is molasses based and a protein supplement; my sister in law's Grandmother fed her sick chooks molasses and porridge.

A tin of homebrand sardines in springwater or homebrand tuna cat food(which has a high tuna content) both under $1 are also high in protein as a dietary supplement.

Keep an eye with the hot week coming up.

I've sold the stuff but never used it, it would want to good for the price they sell it for.
I would be going for the sardines and cat biscuits if I was you.

Sorry that your chookie is sick. If you post it's background history and symptoms maybe someone can give you more specific advice on what's best to treat it with.

I have never used Livermol for a sick chook but have feed it to my breeders just before breeding season for a bit of a pick me up. The chooks reckon it's good stuff, it's too expensive to feed all the time.

This chook is severely underweight, no meat on the breastbone, could barely stand a couple of days ago. I have wormed it and isolated it and it seems a bit better today, it can stand up now where it was sitting or sprawling yesterday. I just have to get some weight on it, though it is 16 w/o now and I wonder if it has been malnourished for too long to achieve a decent adult size.

The livamol was a bit expensive I suppose but it is only one chook to feed and he is the last of the 3 barred rocks we were raising, I've got a bit of a soft spot for him.

Livamol is good for conditioning birds for shows and breeding in conjunction with a good feed program but i have never used it for a sick bird

this one you mention = could it have a disease or secondary infection or perhaps Cocci?

is it one you hatched? or one you purchased?
if purchased was it 'thin/underweight' when you got it

worms in such a young bird can deplete the birds resources - so can external parasites = have you checked for lice/mites?

does it have normal - runny - bloody poop?

(throwing ideas/thoughts around here)

make note of any and everything you see with the bird = every single hint of a symptom can give a clue as to the problem

It possibly could, I'm afraid I don't know enough to make a better diagnosis.

This is the last barred plymouth that we hatched from bought eggs. It (he?) is noticeably smaller than it's pen mates hatched at the same time. This was the group where we had 3 plymouths come out barred as desired and we had the 2 odd, mostly white birds. The 2 white ones have always been growing faster and larger than the 3 barred, and the 3 barred were all coming along at a similar rate, or at least were similar in appearance. The 2 female barred died the other week, apparently both accidents.

A few nights ago I noticed the remaining one couldn't jump up a six inch high step, it tried several times and then just sat down so I picked it up and put it in the pen. The following day it stumbled over in the yard and didn't get up again. When I went to pick it up I noticed, finally, that it was remarkably light and that it had no meat on it's breastbone.

It's a bit dirty around the vent and it's stools are pretty loose. The stools have some firm brown matter and some white urine but also a fair bit of clear liquid passed as well. The stools are also on the small side, like they have been extruded through a small bore tube, not like a full colon dump; if you'll pardon my being too graphic.

I have isolated it in a box and it spent the first 24 hrs just sitting and eating feed within reach. It stood up this afternoon when we got home which is a good sign, I'm just going to keep it contained for a few weeks until I see which way it's going to go. I wonder though if it will ever attain it's usual size if it has been this malnourished during it's growing phase. The two white ones by comparison are like oxes, large healthy looking. The reason I wasn't too concerned earlier was I read somewhere that plymouths are slow to mature, so I thought it was just taking it's time to grow and that the two white ones were doing exceptionally well.

I wont gloss over anything here = I wont allow you to put on those rose tinted glasses
expect nothing that way if you get anything positive you are pleasantly suprised

no it will never attain full size after this bad start but it can grow well regardless - if it recovers
it is definitely 'sick' going on your description - but it could be any one of a number of things

could be Cocci
could be Mareks
could be an infection from a simple scratch that has gone septic and is poisoning it

could be a few things

keep an eye on it but bear in mind it may already be too late and it is just waiting to die

I actually said to Mrs. ww the other day that it was probably doomed, I'm just waiting to see how it goes. Pity though, he is the most placid chook we've got.

The young ones are all on a medicated feed (Barastoc) to prevent cocci, is it still possible to contract it?

How is Mareks contracted and how does it present in a bird?
