Post subject:  Paralysis

My black bantam rooster was seperated about 3 days ago. At first I thought he was being bullied by the other chickens, he started loosing weight so I gave him his own pen with his own food. For the last day he has been paralysed down his left side, he tried to eat and drink but he doesn't look good. Sadly, I believe he mightn't have long to go, if there is no improvement in the next 48 hours I'll take him to the vet to be euthanised.
I'm concerned for the other chickens in that pen is there anything contagious that has these symptoms.

He was a only young bird.
Sadly, he made no improvement over 48 hours and so my partner humanely euthanised him. I couldn't stand to see him suffer any more.
He was soiling his feathers, struggling to feed and drink. What's worse is the nights are getting very cold and it was nocabley weakening him because his feathers were moist from laying on his side all day.

I had a bout of canker in my lofts recently, with some new squabs, however he was not showing symtoms of canker so I assume this was a seperate problem.

I am visiting the exotic vet in a couple weeks to desex my ferret, I'll ask to see if she has any idea on what it might have been. All the other chickens are OK.

I read a few articles on Mereks, your right, it sound suspiciously similar to the symtoms he had.
Sounds like a nasty infection. Many of my chickens are only young so I'll be keeping a close eye on their health. He was seperated from the others before paralysis because he was loosing weight, hopefully I've nipped it in the bud, but I'll be keeping a close eye on the others over the next couple months.

I think chooks pick up Mareks at hatching and some chicks get it and some don't. It shows up in the first 12 months of their life. So I think separating him would not have made a difference as the bug would have been there for a long time and only just recently surfaced to cause the problems.
