How long do I need to treat for purefeather? I was reading 5-7 days maximum? some even say 3 days but can take weeks for all the dead scale to drop off?

G'day Auracanasliz, depends on whether you're using the old method or newer version. The old method pretty much relied on suffocating the mites (the reason for the kero was to dilute the sump oil so that it would penetrate rather than run off ).Vaseline will do the same but wont run off (wont penetrate as far but will still suffocate mites ).
Oaklands remedy (correct me if I'm wrong Oaklands) relies more on direct attack resulting in a quicker kill
As for how long these remedies take probably depends on the severity of the infestation. Whichever one you use apply it once, give it a rest for a couple of weeks, then apply your remedy again then sit back and observe. Give the bird time to heal the new scales wont come back overnight.

Spot on Puefeather.
The light oil carries the insecticide to the source for a quick kill.
Usually a single application is sufficient but I agree with you, do it once and then again in a couple of weeks to follow up and make sure, then it is a case of waiting for the spongy crust that is the residue of the burrowing mites to lift off and heal underneath.
If only a light infestation between the scales, no permanent damage is usually done.
I have see it so bad that legs scales never grow back over the scar tissue and even seen toes shortened or drop off as a result of neglect over a long period.

We still apply vaesline every so often to keep them covered to be on the safe side now they are mixing with the other chooks. Although it took the swelling down and looked better to the eye not long after starting treatment, It seems only recently the discharge (sorry if its not the correct word) from under the scales has come out. I guess this is why I treated them bit more often than normal.

If I ever have mites again I will take you advise and give them a break inbetween :)

Thank you for your help :-D

Cheers
BroodyHen

I guess it would depend on a couple of factors:
What Ml content to the bottle, is 50ml, 100ml or more ? ( Edit:sorry went back to check and the bottle is 25 ml)
What price for the treatment, per bottle ?
What is the active ingredient ?

My Austrolop is infected with Scaly Leg Mite. I have bought Malaban wash as suggested by Oaklands. It is supposed to be poisonos. How many ml do I need to treat one chicken without poising the hen?
