Interesting comments Chicka -Dee.

Chicka-Dee wrote:
Withdrawal time for eggs and meat from chickens given medicine orally is just 5 days after stopping Baytril.
Chicka-Dee wrote:

This may be the case in the US, but is NOT the case in Australia. There is NO withdrawal period that can be used for the very reasons you mentioned earlier ie that Baytril is NOT to be used in food producing animals.

Chicka-Dee wrote:
However, there are other very serious concerns that have caused Baytril to be banned in the US from use in poultry used for eggs or meat.
When exposed to Baytril, a bacteria that cause food poisoning may become resistant to the primary medicine used for treating infected people. If this bacteria is in a chicken and is not killed during cooking of eggs or meat from a chicken that EVER took Baytril, a person may become sick with food poisoning that is very difficult to cure.

This argument applies to all antibiotics. It is just as relevant to other common dog and cat antibiotics such as Clavulox, Doxycycline etc. Baytril (enrofloxacin) isn't even used in human medicine, but closely related antibiotics are. Antibiotic resistant bacteria being passed onto people through the food chain are a real concern around the world.

Chicka-Dee wrote:
Pet supply and vet medicine stores & online retailers sell Baytril.
This is not true in Australia. Baytril can only be obtained from a veterinarian.

Chicka-Dee wrote:
You need a prescription from a bird's veterinarian, who would discuss with you that eggs or meat from the bird cannot be eaten AT ANY TIME afterward. "
This is partially correct. This is technically the law, but the food drug regulating bodies in each state vary in their interpretation of this. In NSW for example, Baytril CAN be dispensed by a veterinarian for use in backyard (not commercial) poultry so long as a suitable withdrawal periods are followed. However, no one is willing to stick their neck out and tell the vets what these periods should be

.

I totally agree with you. However, the danger with Googling information on the internet is that information is presented unedited. Some information, particularly regarding the use of medications, which is derived from the US or Europe may not apply or be different here in Australia.

Chicka-Dee wrote:
If taking Baytril off the list of drugs that vets can use to prescribe to Poultry, narrows the spectrum, then so be it. I'm comfortable with that.
. That's a refreshing point of view, Chickadee, but the number of people who complain about having to see a vet to get drug XYZ suggest that most people don't care about the consequences of abuse of medications- they just want something that fixes their birds. Hopefully, education will fix this.

Chicka-Dee wrote:
I do not think my vet should have prescribed this drug for my chook & the fact that he did without giving me any fact sheet/pamphlet/advice, was down right irresponsible & if other vets out there are doing the same then maybe the APVMA should be notified.

I agree. Your vet should have known better and discussed this matter thoroughly with you to allow you to make up your own mind, armed with all the relevant information.

Thank you for questioning this practice and bringing up this topic.

Thank you Parvo, I do appreciate your input.

No, enrofloxacin is not in human medicine, thank god, because it works against the ones that we do use, which is why it is so bad for us to consume animal products/tissue that have it in it.

Then maybe the vets should just not prescribe it at all. That would be my solution.

Yes, I do realize this, but if a drug is considered dangerous in two countries then maybe we need to be alerted of it's danger in this country as well. Not everything on the Internet is unedited. But I do think you re correct with their being a danger with Googling.

We can only hope so Parvo. As I think asking a vet to prescribe a drug just to get a quick fix for their beloved chook & then sell/give the contaminated eggs to family & friends would be rather irresponsible.

You're Welcome.

After all, we only want to make sure that vets are doing the right thing by their clients as well as people being aware of the possible ramifications of these drugs that vets in his country have the power to prescribe to the unknowing. Don't we.

Most drugs that adversely affect humans, normally are great Fowlman.

Just look at DDT for example.

I agree with you that it is good stuff, if you're not interested in your own wellbeing.

Most people buy chickens to get good wholesome free range eggs, so they have control over what drugs/hormones they directly consume (via1degree of separation).

Ceoliacs Disease is on he rise in this country & believe it or not, all it takes is 1 serious bout of food poisoning, with your stomach lining being ripped out & you are a very likely candidate for being a Ceoliac as well. If Baytril works against the drug that helps humans to recover from food poisoning then the outcome could be very bad indeed.

If youre not a Ceoliac now, and you keep using Baytril & consuming the by-products from the animals that you treat with it, then you may be opening yourself up o it in the future. With only yourself to thank for that little treat of a disease.

I assume you are responsible enough to at least tell the people with whom you feed your lovely drug loaded eggs to, the information of the type of drugs you give your little darlings. After all, anything less would be completely irresponsible. Right?

Cheers
Chicka-Dee
