Well you only need to give them some once a week to a fortnight it's potent stuff,
If you have it in liquid a table spoon for 5 birds should be ample.

Hi C.K.
I noticed late afternoon yesterday that one of her earlobes was bigger than the other. When the vet rang(Yes the vet rang us) I told that her earlobe was bigger than the other(and that it hurt her if we pressed on it) and she said that she had a respiratory infection.I asked her if chicken's ears work the same way as our's do in balance and she said yes. So that's she couldn't stand up or walk.

Thanks for the advice C.K. I did give her some but it too much  :-?

P.S. I'll keep you posted on how she goes ;)

Chooklover, how did your vet diagnose the coccidiosis? Did he test your chickie's droppings? One of my chooks was found to have cocci when I took her to the vet for something else, she wasn't sick, but fully grown chooks rarely show symptoms of cocci. I took her to Melbourne Bird Vet and they were very good, a bit far for you though! There is a bird vet in Brisbane and one on the Gold Coast, but that's still not much help. My chookie was given Toltravet, 1ml each day for two consecutive days (gives them disgusting fishy-smelling poos for a few days! [smilie=rlp_smilie_178.gif] ). They gave me enough to dose our other chookie too, as they said if one has it they usually all do. Even if they aren't visibly sick, it's important to get rid of the parasite, or it will keep reinfecting them. The vet also said it's a good time to worm them too, seeing we couldn't eat their eggs anyway for 3 or 4 weeks due to the cocci medicine. I had to wait a few days after medicating them, then thoroughly scrub out the chook house with a mild bleach solution, put all their straw and dried dropping in the bin rather than the compost, then let the chook house dry thoroughly in the sun. I also sprayed their house with Avian Insect Liquidator and dusted the chooks with Pestene. So if you have other chooks you would need to treat them all and clean their house too. I'm not sure about the leg and ear symptoms, but I would be trying to get some advice from a specialist bird vet if possible. I'm not sure if they could help by email, but you can contact Melbourne Bird Vet here:

http://www.melbournebirdvet.com/contact-us.aspx

Good luck, and let us know how your little chickie goes!

My chickie is only 6-7 weeks old!

i have some bad news. She can't stand, the thingy on her ear is still there, another one has sprouted up on her face, one of her eyes are swollen and she won't open it and she has two ugly(and evil  ) cysts or tumours or growths on her neck!   I'm very worried for her. [smilie=a_whyohwhy.gif] We would of culled her by now except for this: she is EATING and DRINKING like a hog! She goes for it and she's got quite a big crop by now.    Man, I'm soooooooooo worried I'll lose her but the odds are against her

Could the skin lesions be Pox? A picture might help.
Diagnosing coccidiosis based only on clinical signs is very risky. I don't understand why your vet didn't check the droppings for cocci & other parasites.

And, it still could be Marek's as well. Affected birds don't always die quickly-in fact many deteriorate slowly.

Hi
Will try to get a pic- depends if computer wants to work or not in uploading-i hate tech [smilie=rlp_smilie_318.gif] !She is still eating and drinking- is that a good sign???`C.K. mentioned to me that if it is Marek's then one of the feet will be foward- she doesn't have that. She is currently on Baytril( i think that whats it's called) and strawberries  - she has eaten them all now I will have to go to the shops!
Thanks

One leg normally sticks out to the side and is stiff but that is once it is advanced to near death as it is a tumour inside the joint that stops the movement.
It should still be on chick starter changing to a high protein grower as the orpingtons need a high protein to grow out to there large size.
Soozorps has really good info on her webpage.
