We had some wormwood growing years ago, my hubby infused it in brandy for medicinal purposes. It got woody and we pulled it out, it is really difficult to buy. Just have to keep and eye out and ask.

Or if the missus is travelling on her broomstick maybe she can spot some from above?

Hello, soozorps,

I was reading an extremely good and fascinating answer about herbal remedies from you a few minutes ago and it seemed to have vanished [smilie=a_holycrap.gif] Is my brain addled from too many chookies or was I dreaming?

Please repost to restore my sanity than657

the nursery people look at you funny when asking for these unpopular herbs. they sure do!
I suspect they are quietly accusing you of performing black magic. I never thought of that! Explains a lot of comments from across OZ over the years
i'll have to get the missus to ride her broomstick over if they get them in stock for us MWAHAHAHAHA = make sure you take a picture

as to the connections between these plants and Magic (NOT off topic as this explains the plants uses in times past)

The old ways = Plant Rosemary by the gate and Lavender for luck. < this is a saying that has come down thru many hundreds of years

You plant Wormwood for peace and Tansy for joy.

So =
A Rosemary plant near the gate to ward off evil and to add flavour to meals

A row of Lavender plants (anywhere really, just a nice spot where they will grow well and you can smell the fragrance waft over the yard) for luck, the luck is that dried Lavender flowers amongst your clothes wards off clothes moths = remembering that all clothes were made from natural fibres until about 100yrs ago when synthetic fabric was invented – clothes moths do not eat synthetic fabric (clothes used to be VERY expensive and many only had 2 or 3 changes of clothes so clothes moths were bad luck)

Wormwood for peace as it gave peace of mind to those that used it knowing they would not have a ‘scratchy bum’ and would be able to get a good nights sleep, and Tansy gave joy as it is pretty and also helped stop ‘a scratchy bum’ - joy that you were not scratching perhaps?

these originally came from times when only natural remedies were available – they were carried on down thru the generations until they just became referred to as natural or herbal remedies

so originbreed get yr wife and her broomstick to collect the plants and have a nice quiet chuckle

Thanks Soozorps, that is very enlightening as to the varying uses of the old herbal remedies.
the young sales people in nurseries do look at funny and it is pointless telling them the cat nip keeps the cat sedate when
he's airborne on the broomstick.
the chooks have not touched the rosemary or basil in the garden, but they have destroyed the marjoram and tasted the oregano.
what other plants are of old world remedy value?
and do you belong to a coven?

only joking. thank you for sharing your knowledge

the young sales people in nurseries do look at you funny and it is pointless telling them the cat nip keeps the cat sedate when he's airborne on the broomstick. OH SNAP ! ! ! sidesplit.gif the mental picture there is amazing laughter.gif
and FYI = there is Cat Mint and Cat Grass too = Bunnings often have a 3 way planter you can buy of these = GO BUNNINGS ! very forward thinking of them hey :-D

the chooks have not touched the rosemary or basil in the garden well that is a bonus, but they have destroyed the marjoram and tasted the oregano. and will continue to do so = these 2 herbs are chooky favs = marjoram exudes a sweet order via the skin that repels flies and mossies (good for humans too = a natural sweet perfume that saves heaps on store bought ones) - oregano also exudes an odour but not sweet and when mixed with marjoram (and garlic = another fly and mozzie repellent) makes the chooks smell like little Italian Restaurants and they rarely have fly or mozzie problems = NO the taste does not transfer to the eggs unless they eat WAAAAAY too much of them all but it is obvious in the flesh if you eat them – so if you don’t want strongly flavoured meat remove the herbs about a week before you ‘process them’
what other plants are of old world remedy value? have to think on that as I use many but never really think abt them
and do you belong to a coven? no sidesplit.gif laughter.gif sidesplit.gif just reeeeeally old

only joking. was aware of that :-D but always good to have a friendly joke [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]
thank you for sharing your knowledge no worries

My girls love the marigold petals it makes their yolks quite gold. They peck at the rosemary's flowers, parsley, sage and thyme and demolish the sea side daises, camellia, roses, forget me nots and pig faces when they are free ranging,

Thank you, kindly 52.gif Sue,

I think the yolk colour it's due to the corn, marigolds, and carrots the girls eat. They also eat lots of spinach and silverbeet etc
