Is shell grit the only foods to use to stop a hen from being egg bound?

Is there something to put in their water perhaps?

Hi Hopkins and welcome to the forum.

There are water-soluble calcium/vitamin D3 solutions around that can be used in the water but I think it is more effective to supply shellgrit and if feeding grain-based diets to use vitamin supplements in the food than in the drinking water.

If you are feeding pellet-based diets they will already have vitamin D3 added so no need to add any more, but you should still supply the shellgrit.

The water-soluble solutions are better given direct to the beak of birds which are egg bound or are at high risk of becoming egg bound eg recently sick.

As well as shellgrit you can use broken/crushed cuttlebone, limestone and even crushed cooked eggshells.

Hope this helps

Parvo
