Hi all. I just last week, got 4 Australorps, 14/16 weeks old. One of them has been sneezing on and off and sort of coughing since I got them, otherwise she seems to be ok. Eating well and foraging with the other three. She has light caramel runny/gooey poos too. They were all vaccinated against Mareks and ITL at the farm where I got them, so should I be worried about anything? Any advice would be appreciated as I have read myself into a worried frenzy thinking they will all die on me :(

Hi Sandpit,

There are so many things that "could" happen you need not worry yourself over them all. Moving them would have stressed them and the cough and sneeze could just be a normal old cold related to the stress of moving them. If she is moving about, eating and drinking with the rest then I really wouldn't worry too much. The more developed signs of respiratory disease are bubbly eye (only one eye) and a runny nose. Should this happen I would quarantine her away from all others and get onto some antibiotics straight away. I would however worm them straight away and keep an eye on them but otherwise I think the move was the trigger of the sneeze and things will come good in a week or so.

Spot on advice Sebducks. Quarantine the others by all means but I suspect that the disease has already been passed on to the others so I'd suggest that you treat all your birds regardless (that is if it is indeed a serious disease).
Tell us have there been further developments? If not then Sebducks first response about a stress related cold shouldn't cause undue concern, just offer some tlc.

Well, I wormed them yesterday but before I did that I thought there were some slightly bloody poos. Not 100% sure though. This morning, when I let them out and cleaned up under their roost, there was another pile of runny poos,so it looks like 2 birds now. Seemed to be some sort of 'casing' in one of them, not sure if it was worms or something else. Anyway, there has been no runny poos so far this morning as far as I can tell. I have bought some sulpha-quin and have it on standby just in case. Could I treat them anyway even if they don't have cocci? They aren't standing around hunched up or anything, just sneezing and pooing :?: Thanks for advice so far 52.gif

You could throw some chick starter into their feed mix (it has a coccidiosis medication in it's makeup). Or you could go to the vet and get some Oxymav if things start getting serious.

Well, it's a couple of days on, and I'm pretty sure the sneezing has eased. Still the odd one, but they are all running around and haveing a ball in their run. It's just like haveing babies all over again, so much worry  Thanks to all wave.gif

Good to hear, thanks for the update. There is no end to worry about your poultry babies is there! Some take longer than others to get over colds just like humans do.

One bird is still sneezing and doing runny poos, even after I gave them all sulpha quin for the 5 days as stated on the label. She doesn't seem to be any worse, and is still running around, eating etc, so maybe she just has a cold.I don't want to try anything else just yet as they have been wormed and medicated,I think their poor little bodies need a rest. Does anyone put vitamins in their chookens water?
