Hi - I have a young RIR chick (about 8 weeks) and suddendly it has developed a limp ... A dog jumped our fence and chased the chickens (I think) a few days ago and that may be the cause. She (or he, we are not sure yet) may have been caught or caught her leg on something perhaps?
There is no visible signs of damage .. she just does not bear much weight on one of her legs. I picked her up to try and have a look but must admit not really sure of what I should be looking for. She went very limp and almost played dead when I had her ... but had moved when i went back to the pen.
We are having hot weather here at the moment so am worried she will go downhill fast.
She does seem to be moving around to eat and drink though ...
Any advice / help? What could be wrong??

Hi Lorelei, Sounds like she has just hurt her leg, we would recommend putting her in a small cage to limit movement and easy reach of food and water. Leave her in there for a few days and make sure she is standing on it.

Thanks
P.A

Thanks so much for the advice - much appreciated ... I have some photos of the chick (Chloe is the one) on the gallery page ...
Would also appreciate your thoughts on whether you think they are roosters or hens? I hear you are quite the expert!! Thanks in advance....

My chicks leg appears to be getting worse not better ... She can walk on it when she desperately needs to but it looks pretty awful. She plays dead when she gets scared too (ie just won't get up). How do you tell if the chick is in pain? And what can you do? I feel so awful for it!

We think Chloe = Pullet, Clementine = Cockerel

Thanks

Hi Lorelei, is she isolated in a small cage? She needs to limit the need to use the leg for a few days, then put her on Vitamins. After a few days of rest allow her some limited movement. Leg injuries can take a long time to heal.

Thanks
