Reading about ticks and come across this reference < fowl ticks, also known as blue bugs.> would these be bush ticks?

http://www.helium.com/items/1467669-tre ... n-chickens

I had 2 hens last year with ticks so looking for best prevention if possible

The link you provide gives some good advice, certainly gives you a basis for action.
I don't think they are the common bush ticks but more a species specific tick.
Some years ago when I lived further west they were a problem and there was a vaccine for fowl tick available.
Some species of trees also acted as host to them I was told by locals at the time.
I never had them in all the years I lived in Sydney and am fortunate to not have them here where I am now.
The suggestion in the link to use kerosine on all wood work is good, also the use of Malathion (any flea treatment with 'MAL' in it's trade name is OK) as an insecticide, I would mix the Malathion and kero together to make a spray for application to all woodwork in the sheds.
The beauty of Malathion is that it can be mixed in water or oil based products unlike many other insecticides, for this reason you could use Kerosine or Diesel mixed with the Malathion based insecticide at a strong or recommended "tick strength".
Elsewhere here I have suggested the same mixture as a treatment for scaly leg but the oil component might well be a less intense or irritating form like Goanna oil or fine vegetable oil.
The idea in both instances is the oil base penetrates the area covered in the spray and carries the insecticide for a quick kill of the insects in the cracks and crevaces in the wood .
The use of an "Ivermectin" type worm treatment also could help kill the ticks if by chance they are present as it normally has a 1 month coverage treating both internal and external parasites.
Again in some areas you will get "stick fleas" which are evidenced around the head and eyes, they appear black and are quite small but persistant to a lot of treatments, the Ivermectin type wormers will also treat these as will the treating the areas with the above mentioned Tick spray, the scaly leg treatment can also be applied around the head area with care taken close to the eyes if a mild oil base is used not perhaps Kero or Diesel.

Are the first symptoms of tick paralysis the same in chickens as with dog and cats such as week legs and loss of appetite

Yes, they are unable to stand and it occurs fairly quickly, often within 24 hours.
But this only occurs with the paralysis tick, Ixodes holocyclus, not with other ticks.

There are lots of other reasons why birds may get weak in the legs and be unable to stand. But if you find a paralysis tick feeding on the bird then that's good enough evidence that you've found your cause.

That is good to know as many of us would think is was a disease rather then look for a tick
