An ISA Brown (my favorite chook, Skiddy) which we have had for around 4 months or so has developed a few greyish/dark spots on her comb, they are almost like mould.
Any suggestions as to what it may be, and how to treat ?
She appears to be in good condition (to us noobs anyway) aside from that.
I will try to get a pic and post it if that is of assistance.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

How are the mosquitos around your area at the moment Noddy?

One of my australorp roosters gets greyish spots on his comb at times which i think(?) come from mozzie bites :?: ......that's my guess anyhoo :-D ...i could be wrong-wouldn't be the first time lol

Thanks for the replies.

Peter... It is similar but not as bad... just a few of the greyish coloured spots, none that are black or yellowish.

Dean... The mozzies have been severe at dusk due to local flooding over the past month. We have sprayed the chooks (as well as the puppies and goats) with a insect repellant (Repel-X) from the vet which was rather expensive as well as Bushman's Friend a few times. One of the problems is that whilst it is simple to spray the body, I do not want to spray anything near the face.
It could well be the mozzies as the grey spots only appeared after the recent mozzie plague.

We were thinking about using an antiseptic style cream or lotion to the affected area. Because we are novices we are thinking about using a human friendly cream....

I will get a pic in the morning.

fowl Pox spreads via mozzies and contact with other birds,
so the likely culprit here is the mozzies, it sounds like your chooks just has a mild case which she should over come on her own, but if it leads to a secondary infection she may need antibiotics

(I did not post the actual pic as the image is probably a little large)

I had a good look through the other ladies this morning and it appears that only Skiddy has been kissed on the comb by a mozzie.
It does appear to have improved a little over the past few days but I will keep an eye on it.

Thank you very much for your help.

Yer it's just the 1 bird of ours that seems to attract the mozzies- the australorp rooster. His comb is obviously much larger than his hens and is also much redder. I wonder if that's why the mozzies like him rather than the hens :?:

That doesnt look to bad, so she should pull through, just try and keep the mozzies away from her,

Peter

Thanks for the help Peter and Dean. Skiddy has not laid any eggs for a few days but aside from that seems to be coping OK.

In the past week we installed one of those UV bug/mozzie killers not far from the Ladies House so aside from application of anti mozzie repellant, she should not be too bothered unless we get more rain which appears to be unlikely for a week or two.
