Hi everyone,
I have a 6 month old australorp cross which has one swollen eye. I noticed her sore eye 2 weeks ago, thought it looked like an eye worm and squeezed some white goo out of her eye, and since then I have been bathing it in saline solution, applying terramycin powder to it and its not clearing up. I am now resorting today to using eye drops for allergies and an eye cream called Amacin which is used in dogs and horses for eye problems.I can't afford to take her to the vet. She is eating and drinking normally and is otherwise fine. Is there something I can buy from a produce store or pet store or elsewhere that will help?Avoiding culling her as much as possible. I live in Perth, WA. thinkerg.gif

You could try a tetracycline antibiotic like terramycin/tricon or avicycline in the water for 7 days.
Be very careful with amacin. It contains a corticosteroid- prednisolone I think- which can be dangerous to birds if used for too long- no more than 3-5 days.

Ive given her (Flo) Oxymav B for the last few days as her only source of drinking water hoping that her eye will heal, if it is af fact a respiratory infection...if that doesnt work I will try avicycline. She's had a sore eye for over 2 months now and I really dont know what is wrong, she is fine in every other way except for one swollen, sore, pussy eye. Her droppings are normal, she eats heaps, dustbaths, scratches around in the garden, etc. She is isolated from the flock , noneof the flock have any signs like her at all either, but I know she wants to go back to her friends. I have bathed her eye in saline, and also washed a lot of the pus out with water, but there is still some there and the swelling is the same and she is still not recovered. I guess I'll just hang in there with the Oxymav for a few more day s and see what happens... hide: :(

There is no benefit in changing from OxymavB to avicycline as they are both tetracycline-based products.
I would just treat her for 7-10 days with the Oxymav B.

The fact that the problem is so long-standing may mean that the antibiotic may not clear the infection up.
If there is pus in the sinus around the eye which is causing the swelling then it will have solidified and the only way to remove it, unfortunately, may be surgically.

The only other thing you can do is have another really good look at the eye and make sure there is nothing stuck under the eyelid- give it a really good flush with saline under the eyelid if you haven't already.

Are you sure there is no worm in the eye?

I managed to find an avian vet nearby, he said she had CRD when I got there even though she had no other symptoms but for the infected eye, and we discussed options . I wanted her to be operated on and for her eye to be flushed out and given antibiotics and to see what happened after that, as I valued her as a pet, so that's what he did. When I went to pick her up, he told me it was NOT CRD to his surprise woohoo4 and that she had been pecked in the eye probably and she had a nasty infection. He gave me amacin for her eye.! I am so relieved that she will be ok, albeit minus the use of one eye. She is now scratching around in the garden and will be put back with the flock when she is well recovered. I'm planning on Flo being an excellent egg layer.. [smilie=a_cookiemonster.gif] Thanks so much for your support and advise everyone [smilie=thanks.gif] so happy . a_bravo.gif

I wonder if you can use human antibiotic eye ointment for her eye infection?

Hope she gets better soon.
