I have been raising guineas for a couple of years, but this year I have been losing a lot. They die at all ages, but mostly between 3 and 10 weeks old. They are all on game food starter and I keep them under light for about 2-3 weeks. Then they move into moveable pens on pasture. (moved every day) Not overcrowded by any means - the younger ones (between 3 and 6 weeks have a box to get into at night with straw and protection from the weather on all sides. The older ones are just under tin with perches. They die in all my pens. Out of 50 guineas, I probably lose about 7 or 8 in those early weeks. The only thing that I can think of is the changeable weather down here in Victoria. We can be 35 one day and 24 the next with nights sometimes going down to 14. Does anyone know if guineas are that susceptible to the cold?

Hi Misty,
Are they scouring or showing other signs before they die?

You probably need to have a post mortem done and maybe have histopathology done on one of the freshly dead birds, preferably by an avian vet. The closest to you would probably be Dr Colin Walker at Knox. If you don't find the cause, then you may continue to have these losses. The weather is probably exaggerating an underlying problem such as coccidiosis or worms or a bacterial infection.
Hope you find out what it is soon.

Thanks - it's hard to see if they are scouring as they are on some pretty chewed up pasture, and they have a coccidiostat in their feed. But maybe that's not enough. I have a homeopathic restore formula for coccidiosis which I have had a lot of success with in my chicks. I will try that. I am not ready to spend the money to have a vet look at them ... yet! Some of them have seemed to be thin, pointing to an enteritis issue.
The only other thing that could be an issue is that the majority of the older ones that have died are on pasture where I raised some meat chickens in the spring. Still, some of them arn't as well.
