the bottle of oxymav 100 came today ! yay.
but i was reading the back of the bottle and it says.....

"EGG- DO NOT USE in laying birds where eggs or egg products are to be used for human consumption or processing".

It had with holding periods for all other animals and consumptions of milk and meat form those animals. but it just said DO NOT USE in laying birds.......etc, in that part.

So does that mean i will never be able to eat eggs from these birds if i use this product ???

that's sad if that is the case. i was looking forward to eggs.

the last bottle of oxymav B didnt have any warnings like that on it. :-?

This is exactly the issue that has been discussed in previous posts about withholding periods.
Oxy.mav B is less concentrated than Oxymav 100.

There is no witholding period becuase none has been ascertained.
But if you consider that tetracyclines are used in human medicine, the levels that will be present in eggs will be miniscule compared to a human dose.

Technically, you shouldn't eat the eggs. No one can tell you for how long residues may be present.

No one can technically advise you otherwise but from a practical viewpoint I would suggest at least 4 weeks after you (the hens) finish the course of antibiotics. You should not ever sell eggs from these birds and if anyone has tetracycline allergies they should never eat the eggs from these birds.

This is a complicated issue with liability issues but that is my take on the situation.

Has anyone on this forum continued to eat chicken eggs after treating with Oxymav 100 ?

i tried to look for previous posts about oxymav 100 but didnt see anything with a discussion about the warning and egg consumption.

The oxymav b and 100 are both weak in strength you need to use 2 or 3 times that of the original oxyb that was one level teaspoon per ltr that said you need to be careful because the drug stays in the birds system for a long time and that is why there is no withholding so you have to decide if the bird is more important than eating its eggs.

I emailed planet poultry just enquiring about my concerned.... (expecting to get some general responses or none at all)

and the man personally rang me this morning. I wasn't expecting that.

He is getting his wife to ring the manufacturer to confirm his belief.

He said 21 days with holding period, but going to confirm that with the makers of Oxymav 100.

He also said he has used it and knows many others that eat the birds and eggs still.... It's also used on cows and the milk and meat is then again used after the with holding period.

He also gave me heaps of tips like using garlic water for prevention of worms etc.....and using it in mash.

And told me about some eye drop (prefron - spelling?) from the chemist which will help the birds with itchy eyes.

and top it all off..... he said he will REFUND my money if i chose not to use this product after all....
But i figured i have already used oxymav b so it's the same thing as oxymav 100 so whatever this chemical is in their bodies it is already there anyways....

oh, Oxymav B is exactly Oxymav 100 . but Oxy 100 is heaps stronger. Just incase anyone was wondering like me if it really was the same thing because the labels are a little different.

So i will await the results.... but will use this product anyways since i have to do something to get these chicks better !
I guess if it turns out i cant eat the eggs... I will just have to buy MORE CHICKENS !!!! What a perfect excuse, I mean reason to buy more chickens.

oh the guy was at the ROYAL EATER SHOW when he called me... haha the man said he got advice also from other knowledgeable people to see what their thoughts were. But he is still going to find out for sure from the manufacturers. ( I HOPE ! i'm sure he will if he has gone to this much effort already)

he was really nice... I wasn't expecting a phone call the morning after the email... just expected an email with some standard answer. that never really answers what you asked. as most places do IF they even get back to you !..... had to stop and think how he even got my number. but then realised the email i used is the same as the order email address i used to get the oxymav.

He was genuinely helpful and his tips were spot on from what i have already learnt from here.

I just hope the outcome is good and we can use the eggs when they are older. The whole point was to raise some chickens and get free free range eggs... having a hard enough time just with the raising chicks part ! :-?

Maybe you can get a couple of healthy, possibly immunised, already POL girls from a different breeder or a reputable poultry farm in your area; then once they settle in you will have some eggs and you don't have to wait for your little ones. Your girls may take longer to lay with the onset of winter and the fact that they have been ill. But I think that you are great not to return them and care for them and make them well again a_bravo.gif

either way the chicks need to get better... so i am going ahead and using oxymav 100. if i cant have the eggs... so be it ! i'll get some adult chickens later on for eggs if i feel that deprived... i've made my decision... but i'm anticipating the information the fella gets from the manufacturer. Just to see what the future holds and how this is going to affect my chicks and eggs. and to just have that knowledge is good for anyone in the future who encounters the same problem and uses this product.

They wouldn't need too much more medication would they? They are starting to look really good now.

I had the same issue with Baytril, but I feel Baytrill is like 10 times worse than Oxymav. I think you should be fine with the whole egg issue because they will be off it by the time they lay eggs.

With Baytrill they say not to give it to poultry two weeks prior to their first lay & to NEVER give it to poultry if humans are going to consume their meat or eggs. I had a post on it earlier, under the heading of Baytrill if you want to go there. Which is why I ended up getting the Oxymav B. Everything I have read about Oxymav, the residuals don't seem to stay in the chickens systems as long as the Baytrill drug but unless your a bio-chemist that has access to the laboratories you'll never know if here are traces of these drugs in the chickens meat or eggs.

I will be interested in hearing about what old mate comes back to you with about the Oxymav 100 though so keep us posted/informed.
