Hello Jan
I am having the same trouble with my hens at the moment. I have lost two in the last two weeks. I wonder if there is a problem in our area since we live fairly close?

I am using a wormer but after reading your posts think i may have to change brands to BigL or Worm Out. Which vet did you get yours from?

Hello Susan,
I am sorry to read that you have lost 2 of your girls recently. My posts regarding losing a hen were a year ago, Sept 2006. Lady Penelope came from a place on the Portsea side of Melb only a couple of weeks earlier and, I am sure, had already picked up whatever it was that eventually claimed her life.
We took her to the Bannockburn Vet and he gave her the drench that is used for sheep, a smaller dose of course!
I have not had a problem with any other of my peafowl, touch wood. I clean their pens and enclosures weekly, water is always fresh and clean, I give them, apart from their staple diet of turkey pellets, corn, sunflower seed and often chopped lettuce and a little bread cut into cubes. Don't know if this is the reason they are all healthy.
I did try the wormer used for domestic chooks/pigs, but the water turns red and they just would not drink it. PA put me onto a supplier of tablets, which can be put into small bread cubes and thrown to the birds, avoiding stress on the peafowl and the human who is catching them to manually dose them. I am sure I stress more than the birds do anytime catching them is needed!
Vetafarm Wormout Tablets Pigeon & Bantam All Wormer. I ordered them online www.vetafarm.com.au. Hope this all helps Susan. Let me know how you go.
cheers
Janb

IT'S HARD WHEN YOU TRY EVERYYHING YOU KNOW AND IT ENDS WITH A DEAD BIRD,I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM HERE AFEW MONTHS AGO ANYWAY I USE IVERMEC POUR ON [ITS USED ON CATTLE]AT A RATE OF 0.1ML PER KG EVERY 3 MONTHS.I USE IT ON PEACOCKS, PHEASANTS, PARROTS, FINCHES, POULTRY, EVEN MY FERRETS IT CONTROLS WORMS AND ANY OTHER PARASITE[LICE FLEAS ] ONLY THING IS YOU HAVE TO CATCH THE BIRDS AND PUT IT ON THE SKIN OF THERE NECK.FOR A SICK BIRD I INJECT LINO-SPECTIN AS PER DIRECTIONS,THEN TREAT THERE WATER WITH OXYMAV-100 AS PER DIRECTIONS,YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET ALL THIS FROM YOUR VETS OR RURAL SUPPLIER ITS NOT EXPENSIVE.I HOPE THIS HELPS IVE USED THEM FOR A WHILE NOW AND HAD 1 DEATH BECAUSE I WAS'NT QUICK ENOUGH AT THE EARLY STAGES OF A SICK ROOSTER.GRAHAME
