Thanks luvmychooks, I read the postings about your fav and it was very timely as Im worried about another of my orpington pullets. This one is following a similar pattern to the first ill pullet that died. I have been watching them closely and noticed that she was standing or sitting around when the others were out foraging. She appears to be lighter than the others and not too interested in food, even the grapes that they all love. her breathing is more prominent than her siblings and she generally looks droopy. No discharges, odours, coughs, sneezes & her eyes are clear. The vet thinks its a respiratory problem (?cause) she had given her an antibiotic injection and has ordered more antibiotics that will arrive tomorrow. I doubt if this pullet will survive and the vet has suggested sending her for a post mortem. Anyone know on how much that will cost? Is it worthwhile? I am reluctant to spend more money as the cost is mounting with the purchase, travel costs, vets bills, medication & quality feed.
kind regards
sandra
The other pullet with the swelling below the eye is going OK and the swelling is slowly subsiding.

Hi Sandra, An Autopsy is a very good idea if you have a large flock if you only have a few then it may not be cost affective? They generally cost around $80-$120 but can be higher depending on the amount of tests. Respiratory infection can be caused by a few factors such as the most common method of transmission from another birds (not necessarily a chicken- some wild birds are know carries such as Doves & Bellminers) another cause is an injury or foreign object in the nostril. The injury then leads to infection & possible secondary infection with more severe symptoms such a CRD.

Thanks

Hi
Despite the trip to the vet, an antibiotic injection and antibiotic powder in the water the pullet died this morning. I rang the vet to let them know but will not be sending her for autopsy due to the cost, thou I would dearly love to know why three have died. The cockeral still looks spritely but the one remaining pullet is sort of OK but not as active. I fear I will lose the lot, thou the silkies and isa browns are a picture of health at the moment.
I am treating all with Oxytet (OTC) as recommended by the vet. Also feeding compfrey and garlic. Ive tried to find someone who could identify the disease to no avail. Its awful watching them get sick and die one by one.
Sandra
