Hi All

Thanks for the advice - I was talking to a couple of the guys at my local poultry club on the weekend and the club orders the vaccines in bulk and organises a time that suits everyone. Seeing as I have just joined my local club I am finding out heaps of great information! All of them are so friendly and helpful! I am feeling much more confident about this topic now 52.gif

My advice to a newbie, join your local club [smilie=a_cookiemonster.gif]

Cheers

I have always vaccinated all my pekins and always will. I know of people that say they don't because they let only the strong survive and they hide behind a term called "breeding for resistance" which is a load of rubbish they are just too lazy and don't care enough about their fowl to treat them and I think they should not have any fowls at all. There is a disgusting old woman from north queensland that comes to mind I won't name her but the rspca has visited her for sick fowl and disgusting conditions.

So is it only the mareks disease the vaccine works on

PekinLady - what do you vaccinate against? Just Mareks? When you buy commercial chicks that are vaccinated, does anyone know what they are vaccinated against? I wish you could buy vaccines for chickens in packs of 10. There could be quite a market out there. Karen_H - what vaccine does your poultry club get in? It would be great to be able to vaccinate backyard flocks against fowl pox, mycoplasma and coryza as well as mareks.

I have found myself a bit caught out with the 'vaccination' status of purchased chickens. Sellers say their birds are vaccinated.... but some only do for Mareks and others do for a range of diseases. I didn't think to ask what they were vaccinated for. Does anyone know of any place/person who sells chickens in the Brisbane/Toowoomba region (or even better - in the Brisbane Valley area) who sells chickens that are fully vaccinated - ie. fowl pox, mareks, Myco, Coryza, etc. If you have a suspected respiratory disease in your flock like mycoplasma, does bringing in a bird that is vaccinated ensure they won't get it?

LJ.

Vaccination is NO guarantee, that I know first hand from many years ago. Most only vaccinate for Mareks and Fowlpox and many call this 'fully vaccinated' not sure I agree with that and no you cannot vaccinate for respiratory diseases sorry

What else should chooks be vaccinated for apart from the fowlpox and mareks

I definately know there is a vaccine made by Intervet for Infectious Bronchitis and there is one for infectious laryngotracheitis. But reading Weston's previous post in this thread there is a link to an advertisment for someone in Sydney who is offering a vaccination service and they claim to use vaccines for:

"I vaccinate for:

Mareks Disease (MD)
Fowl Pox (FP)
Infectious Bronchitis (IB)
Infectious Laryngotracheitis(ILT)
Infectious Coryza (IC)
Avian Encephalomyelitis (AE)
Chronic Respiratory Disease - Mycoplasma gallisepticum (CRD) "

So now I am confused.... can you vaccinate for Infectious Coryza and Mycoplasma or can't you?? Anyone ever had chickens vaccinated for these?

And just to throw another cat in among the chickens [smilie=a_rolling.gif] I came across this news story on the ABC that says that they found combining some chicken vaccines has actually lead to deaths due to the development of a new lethal strain of ILT
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-07-13/c ... us/4127804

And I thought having chickens was going to be so simple....

I was told by 3 vets that you cannot vaccinate for chronic respiratory disease so I would be cautious on that one
