That's interesting. What do they do then, as in, how do they affect the chooks?

They are chewing lice, not sucking lice, & feed on skin, feathers & body fluids under the skin- not on the bloodstream (though this can occur).

Their main effect is to irritate the birds which can affect egg production and growth rates.

Mites on the other hand are true blood suckers and can cause anaemia in large numbers. They can also carry various blood-borne infections whereas bird lice do not carry transmissable infections

I find an effective way to control lice and mites on the actual birds is to mix the lice/mite powder with fine sand or dry dirt and place in an undercover area which stays dry. The birds will love rolling around having a good old dustbath with the added bonus of killing the nasties.

Just discovered those mite today so not happy but I come to see how to get rid of them and I hope its easy than the fleas we had 12 months ago
