What suggestions does anyone have for successfully worming chickens? I do everything the directions say, take the water away two hours before nightfall so that they are thirsty in the morning to drink the worming mixture. What do you do if the chickens refuse to drink it..? Either it must taste terrible and my stubborn girls will hold off, eight hours later, I then change it back to fresh water to find that the girls are extremely thirsty! There must be some tricks to this...?!! Looking forward to some great advice! dh8989u9

Chookies aren't silly, they know the taste difference in the water.

After much reading on this forum, alternate between Avitrol Plus Tablets and Vetafarm's Wormout Tablets quarterly, the start of each season is a good way to remember.

At full moons I use garlic infused water, 2 cloves slightly crushed per 1 litre of water overnight, take the garlic out before giving it to the chookies, or 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar per litre of water. You can also buy apple cider vinegar with garlic at your local stockfeed. Or 1 clove of finely chopped garlic in Greek yogurt, keeps the chookies healthy.

I too was having problems with my chooks not drinking the wormer laced water. I recently tried the avitrol plus tablets for the first time and found it great. I only had 4 chooks to worm though. I weighed each one to ensure the correct dose. The tablets are fairly small, but I broke them in half and with the silkies I just dropped them straight into the beak onto their tongues (easier done if you get someone to hold them.... kids are great for this purpose ;) , and with my isa browns I just slipped the half tablets into a cooked corn cornel and held it out on my hand and they just gobbled them down. It is a bit slower doing it by halves, but I had no issues with the tablets coming back out. Good luck!

I think we could all do with more sleep [smilie=a_dreaming.gif] , sleep deprivation is running rampant.

I roll the tablet is a very small piece of bread basically the same size and the tablet and its snapped up by the girls in seconds and gone. I still use the water mix for most as I have too many to do by hand but the stubborn ones I use the tablets
