Egg withholding

One of my silkie girls is unwell (lost weight, weak, seems unable to push herself upright and is walking on her hocks) took her to the vet who has given me Baytril for her and Ivermectin for her and the rest of the flock. She freely admits she has no idea (being a suburban vet seeing mostly cats and dogs) how long after either drug to withhold eggs from consumption and suggests for three months does anyone know for sure?

I don't bother with a withholding period for eggs after Ivomec (Ivermectin).

I don't know about Baytril. I'll do some research and get back to you.

All I could "reliably" find so far is, "Meat and eggs must be withheld from human consumption until residues are depleted below the tolerance limits set the competent authorities. Comply to the approved withdrawal times."

"unreliably" I have found periods ranging from 3-5 days ("apparently" on the Baytril site, but I never found it) to NEVER eat them or their eggs again as it will always be in the tissues.

Ok...from what I've read.

1. Did your vet give you oral or injectable Baytril?

I think maybe injectable since you said the Baytril was only for your sick bird. The oral solution is dissolved in water and unless you keep your sick bird(s) separate, they all get a dose.

Treating the whole flock IS the sensible choice as if you're treating something with antibiotics, you are most likely treating something which is contagious.

2. Did the vet give you 10% solution or 2.5% solution?

Apparently the 2.5% solution uses a different thing for dilution which is apparently harmful to poultry .

It's difficult to get reliable information because there is such a "cloud" surrounding the use of Baytril in many places that people give their "opinions" as if they are fact. Even the Baytril site isn't open about much.

Update:
On a UK forum someone asked the same question and the responses based on what people's vets told them included...
- 4 weeks after the last dose
- 7 days
- called Bayer and was told 6 weeks
- 7 days if selling, straight away for personal use. It's only a small amount of anti-biotic for a human.

I don't entirely agree with that last one. If you dose the whole flock and begin eating their eggs straight away you get a small dose in each egg for 7/28/42 days ...or forever.

Antibiotics are given routinely to various food-producing livestock in North America and look how they are turning out. :lol:

Nope she gave me the oral syrup to syringe in to her beak. I think she was feeling a bit out of her depth. But I was happy with her prescription as I had over the course of the weekend "coddled" Jin Ji with a box inside and heat lamp and lots of sweet corn to fatten her up again and managed to get a good portion of weight back on YAY!!!

Looks like I came in a bit late as she is cured , dut it sounds like , Either constapation , or eggbound , well done anyway

If the bird is unwell to the point of requiring antibiotics, I would expect to see a serious down turn in her egg production if not a complete stop.
Usually with holding for eggs after antibiotic treatment would be average of about 10 days but i would if she is laying look at giving it a good 3 - 4 weeks.( I am the same with ivomec, I tend not to worry about with holding as there is a nil with holding for the ivomec I use on my cattle for either meat or milk)

Baytril is a good antibiotic, however it can play havoc with their digestive system, particularly the crop, like humans post therapy you can see opportunistic infections such as thrush, its nasty when a chook gets it in their crop. look at getting some nilstat drops (oral0 from the chemist and giving these in between the AB therapy...when she is well and finished the AB's look at Protexin a probiotic to help even out the natural intestinal flora, if you cant get this then some natural yoghurt with cultures in a mash with some grated apple for a few days will help...plus make her nice and strong for the coming breeding season....sounds like she is in good hands though and being spoilt no end :-D

She is a young pullet and hasn't started to lay yet but the vet wanted me to worm the all the girls with Ivomec hence the withholding question.
As a human nurse I'm aware of the opportunistic infections that occur with AB's but I was unsure what would be the best way to administer the probiotic at the end of the AB's thanks for your suggestion. Is Protexin a chook specfic probiotic? Would "inner heath plus" be good? Do you have a mash recipe or a brand you favour?

I don't know about cured..... I don't think she's out of the woods yet ... Perhaps standing in a clearing near the edge of the woods

but if you have any suggestions I'm wide open......
