Sleepy, Sick Pullet

One of our White Leghorn Bantam pullets, 8 months old, has been holding her head on one side. She has been fluffed up and sleepy. A few days later, she was frothing at the mouth and had diarrhoea. Recently, she has been trembling and unable to walk. She still holds her head on one side with both of her eyes open. She occasionally eats. She will drink water. The diarrhoea appears to have stopped. Any ideas of what may be ailing her?

Hello Phoebe,

My first call would be to worm her if she hasn't been done recently.

Is she sneezing, wheezing or coughing. Does her breathing sound normal or does she have a crackle noise when she breathes.

Hope she comes good quickly.

No, she has not been wormed recently. Nor has she been sneezing, wheezing, or coughing. Her breathing is normal. Her droppings are normal again, but she is eating very little and may not be passing much through her system.

Although all of my hens now need worming, she is the only one out of 30 odd hens with these symptoms. They all run together as a flock.

However, I have put her in a isolation pen in case she is a health risk to the others.
