Hi there...thought i would get in early and ask what do members do when their girls are sick but there is no obvious signs other than "you just know" ...??

One symptom is swollen vent rather bright pink....she is one of my Isa Browns...clear beak and eyes, have not been able to see which poos are hers yet untill i keep her isolated today. Laying until a day or so ago...but just standing silently and very poorly.

Any help is appreciated as always..i have no meds other than respiratory and worming meds..she was wormed 1st of spring.

I can try buying whatever is suggested first thing tomorrow.(today being sunday).

Thanks

Sorry to read about your crook chook :(

Has her vent been pecked by the others?

Maybe early signs of a prolapse?

Can you possibly post a photo?

There is basic a sick chook recipe:

2 tablespoons rolled oats
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon honey
2 tablespoons natural yoghurt
2 tablespoons grated apple or carrot
Avian multivitamin powder

You can also use infant's Pentavite in her water as a pick me up.

Maybe she was a bit egg bound?

Isa's need extra calcium as they produce so many eggs in their 1st year, their bodies get just exhausted.

That's why commercial egg farmers sell them after their first year of laying.

PP...here is a photo..just noticed today she also has two distinct bald strips either side of her neck running about two inches long when you part the feathers...she isnt being bullied or pecked, in fact she is one of the alpha females and does most of the bullying...

No eggspert in regards to her swollen vent. May some one with more eggsperiences can assist.

Have your girls been dusted recently for mites, lice etc.

A reminder to all that coops need to be Spring cleaned...

Had a good look at the other chooks and her vent looks pretty much like theirs really but her egg was very thinly shelled.

One thing, i always feed them Red Hen Scratch mix which is more expensive but laced with extra protein and calcium...but on Wednesday i couldnt get it so bought Darling Downs which is choc a block with molasses and very little corn compared to red hen...not sure if that put her off but Daphne, my fave girl is looking like she may be showing same signs. Both their tail feathers are sort of missing or thinned out.

Bought Poly-Aid Plus which is a calcium,Vitamin, protein and probiotic for sick birds and poultry..it is very poorly written with regard to dose..says 10g in 5 ml of water but does not say if this is per bird or flock or what....i mixed it with wheat bran, creamed corn, shell grit and yogurt and they all ate it..will repeat tomorrow.

Thanks for your help PPxxx

Do you have a discount grocery store, like NQR (Not Quite Right) I often get cottage cheese and yoghurt there very cheaply for my girls.
