Hi everyone, this afternoon I was looking up battery hens on the internet because we are looking for some to rescue. The photoes I saw and the things I read absolutely APPAULED me.
The things they do to those chickens are so inhumane
One part that I read was that a hen had died in her cage ( that was the same size as an A4 piece if paper), because her claws had grown over the wire, so she couldn't reach the food. They left her body in the cage for months. I just thought I would make a statement about the cruelty to the chickens in these battery farms. thanks.

I don't support battery hens of course, but bear in mind that any website you might have looked at will be going out of it's way to make battery hen farms look as bad as possible.
Unfortunately in every industry involving animals there are people who don't understand there responsibilities towards the animals in their care.

At the end of the day, as we all know, if a hen is stressed, diseased or malnourished it will not lay eggs, so if these farms are trying to make money then it is in there own interest to look after their hens isn't it?

Unfortunately in every industry involving animals there are people who don't understand there responsibilities towards the animals in their care.

I imagine everyone on here manages to produce more than enough eggs for their own use, so indirectly we are all reducing the demand for cage eggs.

Hi Schnapper, I know how bad battery farms can be because I have been to one, there were dead birds in cages and the place stunck. We bought some hens for $2 each, and when we brought them home they couldn't walk, they didn't know how to stretch their wings or anything. It was so horrible to see these birds in so much pain, bacause some were totally crippled and others had all their feathers plucked out. It was so heart-breaking
We buy battery hens every now and then just to give them a second chance.

It is hard to go to a poultry farm with battery hens and not be upset, there must be a better way? Good on you courta for giving a lucky few a new life.

Thanks Jeff! :-D
We are always taking in animals that need homes, because my mum is a member of WIRES, so we get all sorts of things! :-D

I have kept hens for over 25 years to supply eggs for my family and to sell any oversupply which helps with feed costs. For this length of time I have only purchased 'end of lay' battery hens. My heart goes out to them as most are only still young (by my standards) birds. For the first week it is necessary to enter their house at night and pick them up from the floor and place them on the perch. After this they are fine and do it themselves. They start out laying anywhere but after a week or so head into the nest boxes to lay their eggs. I am totally in awe at the personality and trust of these hens once they settle in here. I just love "my girls" to bits.
cheers
Janb
