Hi,

I have two year old rooster and just recently I noticed one of his eyes is puffed and swollen. I got hold of him when he went to roost and the eye is full of pus. I rinsed it with a bit of saline and when I got the pus out of his eye, it was red and bloody underneath, next day I cleaned more pus out of his eye, but there seems to be a big pocket of pus under his eye which is hard and I cannot get it out. He isn't to thrilled about me cleaning his eye out so I can only imagine it must be hurting him. I don't know if I am doing him more harm than good, by rinsing his eye because I cannot see his actual eye at all, so I don't know if its been pecked out by one of the hens or if it is just hidden under all the swelling.

He seems to be ok other wise, he is eating and drinking ok, he is free ranging with the hens and when I was holding him he doesn't seem to have lost any weight, there is no rattling or wheezing, in fact if not for the eye I would say he is in good health.

Any suggestions on how to fix him?

Maybe he has an allergy like hayfever?

Or alternatively he may have a growth like Chicka_Dee's Cylde conf665

Photos would help with a more accurate diagnosis.

That you, kindly 52.gif

Hi Petite Poulet
I had a look at the pic of Chicka_Dee's Clyde, not like that. Nugget Jr's whole eye is puffed and swollen with a pocket of pus underneath, I am off to clean his eye again now, will take my phone and see if I can get a pic of him.

Thanks

The eye seems to be worse this morning, each time I clean it the next time it appears worse. I am wondering if I am not causing more damage and maybe should just take him to a vet. This morning there was a lot more pus and he was very reluctant to let me clean it. It must be hurting him whatever is going and I noticed he smells bad too. I have never noticed him smelling before and I have been looking after this eye for a week now.

Seems he has been attacked, Vet found a puncture wound on his neck under his feathers. Vet says it is an abcess and gave him a shot of anti-biotic and a shot of pain killer, also gave me anti-biotic pills to give him, so here's the new question, how do I give a chicken a pill?

I have given pills to cats and I have given pills to dogs, never thought I would have to give a pill to a chicken. He wasn't happy, but I got it down his throat.

If you get right to the back of their throat it will go straight down

I hope he is on the mend
