Hi all..i know this topic has been covered before...just want to know if I should leave my hen with the bald neck alone if i have ruled out bullying and lice..

Appears to be a respect or dominance issue according to prior posts but do i put something horrid tasting on her neck or leave her be..looks ridiculous at the moment. All the flock happy and healthy otherwise.. Have heard gentian violet, gosh that will look great? Purple ??

I never have seen the other girls peck at her neck mind you..perhaps I will separate her at night for a bit, what do you think?

Maybe red mites and she is scratching her neck? Have you dusted them and the coop/sleeping area/nesting box recently?

No mites, others are all pristine and perfect...dust them and nest boxes regularly along with garden lime and roosts rubbed with pest oil each fortnight (i am a bit obsessed with my girls).

Also had them since kittens. I did read in a very old post that if you were to spy on them you would see a bald necked hen being pecked (hen pecked) as a sign of respect or if they are the head chook, so often the leader rooster is pecked the same way..not sure if this is the thing with mine but she seems very healthy, just looks attrocious.

If i seperate her at night, she may get stressed and i can see them during the day and she is not being picked, if anything she is a bit bossy herself.

Hey D wave.gif

My Becky has a bald neck, but she is a scrappy ol Isa Brown.

She is one of the top dogs in the pen and doesn't get picked on. In fact she's the only chook I have ever heard growl.

I know what you mean though it does look atrocious. There is something just not right about a bald necked chicken, and considering there is such a breed out there called a naked neck conf665 it just doesn't look right

I wouldn't worry mate.

Just keep an eye on their behaviour and if nothing appears unordinary then they'll grow back after her next moult [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Oh cool,

Remember not to put too many under her if this is her first time.

Clara still hadn't got the hang of it. I would say 5 or 6 max.

What sort you getting?

:-D

Yes, only got six of the tiniest mixed bantam eggs i have ever seen, put them in a separate nest ready for tonights transfer and got Precious out to dust and water her and before I knew it she had hopped on the new nest and settled over the new clutch making the BEST noise imaginable so i left her there (neil made me a beautiful new nursery despite whinging all the while)

PM you for some advice by the way xx ta Chick th_clap.gif th_clap.gif

I love that little sound. It's so precious and just resonates " contentment & motherlyness" doesn't it :-D

Will keep my fingers dissed they all hatch out [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]
