Hi all,
I'm in Adelaide so getting ready for another hot week.
Does anyone have tips for chook comfort in hot weather?
They have access to shade, shelter, lots water and the yard for hole digging to sit in.

So is ice in water ok? they do seem to avoid the sprinkler on other days when it is on.

Thanks!

Leah

Hey wave.gif

No they don't like water, so ice or spraying them with water is not an option.

It sounds like you have all they need i_like1

They will sit with their little wings out as they are naturally a warm blooded animal so as long as they have dirt to dig holes in to get into cool dirt baths that is the best thing.

My girls love hanging out in a deep dirt bath on hot days

Hope this helps

Cheers

I just found all three of my girls dead—not a mark on them so must be due to the heat, nearly 45°C in Adelaide!

Oh no PolAnimal, that's so sad. Sorry to hear about your girls. I'm going to go out and check mine again....

Going to leave it a month or two then a couple of friends will build a bigger, better coop and run, fit a couple misters etc.

Once you have chooks life is not the same without them.

That is bad news. At least it is an opportunity to upgrade their facilities. I am very happy with the mister I put in. Over about 30 C, I put it on and the girls mostly choose to stand under it. They can go to another area if they prefer, but even there the temperature is at least 5C lower than outside the run. So, I personally am happy to have and use a mister.
