Bought two five day olds from a very reputable poultry supplier and there were so many of them I picked them out and the salesman packed them safely in a box with straw and when I got home I noticed one has both feet distorted and bucked under but running around like a trooper...i am going away tomorrow for three weeks and leaving the mum and two babies in a separate nursery with a very reliable sitter so too late to take back to supplier as not close .....should I give this chick a shot at life with wonky feet...? I am furious with myself for not inspecting the chick prior and leaving it so late before going away but I stressed about my broody after eggs were duds and not hatching. She had lost so much weight. She is looking after babies brilliantly....thanks [smilie=a_cookiemonster.gif]

wave.gif Doolan,

Definitely give it a chance at life. We have two chookies with special needs. Blossom our white silkie has funny feet and she's particularly uncoordinated and Browser also has stiffness in his legs. Both of our special needs function extremely well within our mixed flock

You would be surprised at how well everyone gets along. There's no picking on, segregation or exclusion of our special needs chookies.

There's harmony and happiness in our yard.

So yes, give it a go and you will be rewarded.

Odd that you mention the stunted wings?!

Of the 7 that we brought home, only 2 seemed to thrive and I noticed that all those now deceased, remained fluff balls - almost not signs of growth, and the Australorp that remains is going GREAT guns?!

I don't get it at all conf665

So good to hear your Chicken Whisperer is caring for your little ones.
(Have a cocktail for me!)

There is something to be said for allowing surrogate mums to hatch the eggs for us hobbyists...i wonder if more defected births are recorded using the machine method....and if somehow if the fluff balls had hatched out naturally if somehow the mum would recognise that or realise it prior to hatching ? Too much thinking .....

Defo have a cocktail for you Cass xxxxx

Hey D wave.gif

Hmmmm a holiday that sounds wonderful, but I have no such luck to have one of those anytime soon, so have a drink for me too hun [smilie=a_goodjobson.gif]

Sorry to hear the eggs turned out to be duds. That super sux, but at least you gave her some babies to look after, even if one of them is a little wonky. :-D

One of my Barnies has real wobbly legs. I'm not real sure what has happened as she looks perfectly alright, it just looks like she's got a bad case of the wobbly boot going on.

When she eats she has to sit down on her haunches but the others don't pick on her or anything so I'm keeping her as she is just the sweetest little bird. She has the nicest nature and talks to me when I sit her on my lap, so you never know, your little wonky one might turn out to be your fav :-D

Happy cruisin'

Cheers
Chicka-Dee
