Sadly, this may be sometimes true - but maggots will attack live tissue and cause terrible, fatal damage. Given the right conditions they will grow very, very quickly. A nice, warm humid environment under a chook sitting on poo on her nest on a warm night, makes an ideal growing environment for maggots. Once established (and this can be fast), they feed indiscriminately. My beloved Persi was eaten from the outside in and from the inside out. She must have been in excruciating pain.

I take pride in maintaining a clean and healthy environment for my birds and this still happened. I now use garden lime (not hydrated lime) to help control flies and other bugs. I sprinkle it over their run and through the sawdust in the chook house. When I do my daily poo collection, I sprinkle lime over the poo and around areas where it was deposited. I also use lime in the compost heap where I chuck the poo, and cover the poo with soil. These practices seem to be making a positive contribution as there appear to be fewer flies around - but then the weather has been milder.

My warning? Be vigilant.
