Post subject:  How far away should I be from a chook farm?

Hi folks,
I am looking to move into Qld and have been strongly advised to stay clear of large egg producing farms and /or commercial free range operations. We have a large variety of heritage and lesser known breeds - some of which we have imported, making us a quarantine site for some months after delivery.
Our local vet is a bird specialist and insisted if I move our operation, I must ensure that no commercial operation be within cooee of us. He explained that it would only take a few rogue pigeons to come over for a free feed to help spread disease and parasites from one property to the next.
So how far away should we be? Line of sight? ..a kilometre?
This is so very restrictive, apart from buying the house and padocks, setting up all the sheds, yards, pens, watering, cleaning areas, overhead netting- what stops someone buying next door and setting up chook sheds?
I'm losing sleep over this...any help you can give is appreicated

Cheers,
andrew

How far away should I be from a chook farm?

With many diseases spread air born around 1 km or more I would think is suitable but as far away as possible seems the best answer

Thanks Bill - 'was thinking along those lines. The Vet said 'as far as possible' but not specific when pressed.

Where I am is safe for now, but I'd like to relocate closer to Brisbane, but not too close. So far, the local estate agents have been less than helpful in telling me where the chook farms are ...and what areas to avoid, but still give me plenty of water for irrigation, cleaning of pens, watering, etc.

I guess it's a case of wait and see what I find.

Thanks, but their response was 'interesting'...they were very wary of why i want to know ( eco-terrorists, PETA, etc have a history of doing mischief at poultry farms)

Cheers,
andrew
