 Post subject: stickfast fleas

i got some chooks with stickfast fleas,i got some malawash and the guy at the shop said i could spray it on the chickens,my question is will it hurt there eyes 52.gif

No don't just spray it on you can dip them in the solution but NOT their heads. Use a cotton bud for around their eyes and then put vasoline on quite thick so that you completely cover the fleas. You may have to do this twice to make sure you get them all.

DON'T SPRAY OR PUT THEIR HEADS UNDER MALAWASH

I used avian insecticide supplied by my vet it looks like milk in colour and smells funny but it worked. I have heard of using vasoline but never tried it but mite next time as it would be cheaper

You will also need to be aware that the flea can burrow into the dirt down to around 15cms which is where they spend the rest of their lifecycle after the chook/blood meal. You will also have to treat the coop or where the chooks with the fleas have been.

how do you now if your chook or duck has stickfast fleas.

I have just had a small outbreak of stickfast fleas and my vet prescribed me Ivomec at 0.3ml once a week works well so far
