Hello I have what might be a simple question or not? I have just over a dozen silky bantams and all the hens have trouble with their sight or more to the point the line of sight. Their poms are so large it is impairing their forward line of sight and they panic when I or a member of the family is in the coop. My question is can I trim the pom so they have better forward vision?

if the fluff extends down past the eyes it creates a blind area for them =
we were looking after a friends Silkie that had this probelm - she was terrified of the rooster and so flighty I thought she would have a stroke from the frights she got when she finally saw something near her - so with permission I carefully gave her a Mo-Hawk [ trimmed straight up each side of the head ] giving her a good line of vision even if she did look 'odd'
instantly her true personality came out = she is a friendly cheerful girl full of curiosity and as she could then see the rooster and other birds easily = fast made friends with the other hens - she even became a mother for the first time while she was holidaying here - my roosters 'brushback' is good and compensated for her over abundant pom-pom and her babies all have lovely pom-poms as a result

trim if you are not showing the bird - but if you want to show you will have to leave it intact and try to get it to sit above the line of the eye for the show

Thanks for the help, no I won't be showing her and I feel if I don't trim her she will hurt herself as she panics when anyone approaches

I have trimmed mine many times but mostly when they are brooding so they are not startled and come off the eggs to fast and break them

Yep trim away. All my non-show Polish get trimmed. So much easier for everyone.
