I have hatched some guinea eggs & have had keets with legs they seem to loose control over. The go out to the back & then to the side & finish up not being able to walk & their legs are facing the wrong way. I have had to put 1 down, I cried while I did & now to make it worse 1 more is the same way & another starting to have trouble. They are now 3 1/2 weeks old.

Sorry to read about your Keets, I don't know what it could be, but some one here will know.

Hi Lou, WELCOME TO THE FORUM Hope you find the Forum, Informative, Helpful & Fun

As we don't know the specifics of your problem the following should shed some light

If you using an incubator:
When the Keets hatch they must be on a rough floor, most commercial incubators have a perforated metal floor to prevent "Splayed Legs" which is easily corrected see link http://www.getphpbb.com/phpbb/viewtopic ... cksaustral

In the Brooder
Again the floor must have a rough surface, covering the floor with wood shavings, towel or similar is ideal.

Under a Hen
Some hens can sit too tight on the chicks, particularly if all the eggs have not hatched, you can rectify this by putting a Pool ball or similar under the hen this will prevent her sitting down on the chicks.

Legg problems & or curly leg syndrome in older chicks
This is caused by a vitamin D deficiency. The chicks would have hatched with this deficiency as a result of the Hen (Mother) also deficient. Liquid Vitamin such as "Calcivet" is recommended.

Thanks
P.A

Thanks for the welcome & thankyou for you replies. The keets where hatched in an incubator & taken straight out, they where first on rough fabric then on wood shavings. I found the pictures & instuctions for the foot splints but unfortunatly the feet are pretty good, the real problem is where the drumstick is joined to the body. They have just been moved to their own pen, the really bad one still just shimmies around & the other hasn't deteriated any further. I have put them on calcivet liquid & a multi vitamin powder containing riboflavin & d3 so hopefully it helps. There have been so many different things people have said it could be but I think maybe the vitamin intake.

Hi Lou, Good move, Calcivet in a good product as will help build bone density & strength. After that keep up the shell grit, especially to your breeding stock.

Thanks
