Hi all,

Well I've been waiting to see who would be the first to bring the dreaded subject up ---- so it might as well be me.

What's everyone's feelings re the Bird Flu ----- will we get it :?: --- how bad do you really think it is --- are the Govt and the media tending to overplay the situation what with closing our borders etc.:?: :?: . What action can we all take to prevent it getting to our birds. :?: :?: :?:

Interested to hear your thoughts.

Snowball :D :D :D

This website is from the US Dept of Agriculture.

There is biosecurity tips and also information on avian influenza.

http://www.aphis.usda.gov/vs/birdbiosec ... urity.html

I hope you find it as interesting reading as I did.
I don't know if I would go to all of the extremes mentioned in the website.
All of my breeding runs are enclosed - I let each run out into the orchard on alternate days so that they get a chance to frolic and run about.

Wayne

P.S. There is a similar website here in Australia with basically the same sort of information - it was posted on another poultry forum.

I must admit, I have been a little concerned lately as we get a lot of wild ducks landing on our dam and the peafowl have free access to the water.
They are mostly Wood Ducks.(Maned Ducks) so aren't international travellers.
I am not worried about my own health(I;m tough) but am still unsure as to whether the whole Bird Flu thing is overhyped.
Time will tell I guess.

We go by the adage, "Worry is Interest paid in advance" we feel there is no doubt a risk of the "Bird Flu" reappearing in Australia (was detected in the 60s) but from our information it is very, very unlikely to be from "Birds" the likely source will be Humans if at all?????

Life must go on!

Thanks

Yes, i must admit that I agree.
We are so insulated here in Oz it allows us to over react regarding the most remote issues.....(terrorism, bird Flu pandemic, refugees etc)
I just don't want my birds to get sick.
And I have been concerned about the Wood ducks coming and helping themselves to the chook and peacock food.....and the possible disease transmission possibilities.
Still, I shall take your advice and stop worrying and go back to enjoying them.
Still no nesting/laying yet........
