I have a grey girl who lost her mate when he escaped. I advertised but no one owned up to having him.
I have moved her into a bird cage on her own because she killed a male I got for her.
Now she wants to con up the young boy in the next cage, but he wouldn't be more than 18mths old.
Is he too young to be put with her?

The trouble is I don't have a spare aviary to put them into.

Any ideas?
I guess I will have to ignore her whims until I get another aviary made. :(

Val

Hi Val,

Sorry, this reply is probably 3 months too late!!

It would be ok to pair up your grey hen to the 18 month old bird, but I'd do it in neutral territory as hens are usually the dominant sex in ringnecks and being older she may attack him.

I'd also keep a close eye on them for the first few days after introducing them to each other and provide separate feed containers just to be safe.

Of course, by this time of the year, if the hen has gone off the boil she may be less reactive to the cock's presence.

Good luck

If you going to pair them up don't do it in a small cage I have over 40 pairs of ringneck mutations and I can tell you the hen can be aggressive. I have a pairing aviary which as mentioned by parvo is neutral to both and I always pair up at the start of winter.

I have thought about getting a lutino alexandrine parrot as a pet but not too clued up on if they are good or not, they have a big break so I am guessing they have a big bite

Alexandrines tend to have a better temperament than ringnecks in my opinion.
However, they are all individuals!
Also, the lutino alexandrine was derived originally by hybridising the lutino indian ringneck with a normal green alexandrine, then crossing back to alexandrines so that eventually they acquire most of the alexandrine characteristics eg wing stripe, head and body size etc.
So I guess it depneds how many generations of alexandrine have been bred into the bird you buy.
Also, try to buy a cock as hens are more dominant in this species- but that's a generalisation- largely true but not always.
