Eggs not hatching

I hope someone can advise me, I had a hen sit and after 30 days, I decided to remove the eggs, and I found the yolk all dried up with no moisture at all. Half the egg had very dried dark yolk in it. The yolk color was Dark Caramel Color. any ideas what went wrong?

if there was only dried up yolk the eggs were infertile, pam

Or she didn't sit the whole time

was she off the eggs for any long periods when she first went clucky.

whether she was off the nest or not would not matter if they had been fertile an embryo would have started developing with only a few days of siting, just yolk=infertile

I guess what raf is saying is if she sat for 3 or 4 days then sat light on and off it would make a differance. It does happen from time to time hey. Good question though pjh do you have a rooster Karren

I do have a rooster but he is old I think he doesn't crow much these days too lazy :lol:

Thank you for your advice very helpful. I will let you know if this bunch of eggs hatches, I hope so I want little chickies

My rooster is off the boil too the poor little hens sit and sit with no chicks. May be time to retire my rooster I think. I just wonder what age is prime for roosters?

prime age depends on the breed

our birds =
my Orp boys are viable up to 8 or 9yrs old but I usually only use them for a max of 2-3yrs then rehouse them for someone else to get the genetics for the next 2yrs or so years after that fertility starts to decline a bit each year - have a 9yr old male [pet] who still mates viably
Brahma - good for abt 7yrs
Pekin - 12yrs [rarity this one] they average 4-6yrs and hens abt same
Silkie - oldest male was still fertile at 15yrs and randy as all get out!!! we lost him in the heat last Summer [smilie=a_cry.gif]

- and the oldest female was 18 last year she is still with us = we are waiting to see if she lays anything this season but we doubt it she only laid 2 eggs last year

but this is just our birds like I said
