Good morning. I am just getting started with raising chickens. I have had them for years but after all 10 were killed by the neighbours dog I have to start again. I went to buy some POL chooks but found they are $15-$20 each! That is outrageous. I am now thinking of incubating my own but wanted your opinion. I don't have a lot of money so can't spend much on an incubator so would like your advice on that. I would be hesitant to pay more than $100 on one. I won't be incubating a large number of eggs as I live in suburban Brisbane (Wynnum). I am also going to be after fertile eggs from the breed that will provide my family with eggs.

I previously had commercials and pekin bantums together but found that the commercials would attack the bantums. Is this normal and can it be avoided?

Thank you for any feedback you can give me. I appreciate your sharing with me.

[smilie=welcome.gif] hensl82,

Sorry for the loss of your poor chookies :( I empathise with you, as our neighbour has nasty dogs that terrorise my chookies. I hope your neighbour is nice enough to help replace the dead chooks that their dog killed or maybe report the dog to your local council, you don't want any more losses.

You can rent an incubator and brooder, just Google it for your area, a couple of links below. They will often provide you with fertile eggs.

I don't live in your area, so can not recommend the below

http://www.heritagehatchingandhens.com. ... ItemID=604
http://citychicks.com.au/category/rental-packages/

They maybe a bit eggspensive, sometime poultry farms offer the same packages for less.

I think commercial hybrids are quite assertive. Do some research in the type of breed you would like to hatch, perhaps some Australorps or Barnevelders? They are both good egg layers, also they have a nice temperament.

Sorry to hear about the dog killing your chickens... Glad you are going to get back in to it. I think chickens are great !

A suggestion......

How about day old sexed chicks instead? then at least you can have your babies. they are cheap. and you know what you are getting.... well most of the time.

Sorry to read about the loss of your chooks. I will not rant about responsible pet ownership here as I have done so elsewhere on already on the forum.

Smart thinking BFLF with the sexed day olds. They cost about $3 sexed for commercial hybrids. Or if you want the whole incubator chick hatching and raising experience, hire a package as PP suggested. I must say that it is an amazing eggsperience especially if you have children.

Don't forget you will be raising chicks until they are POL, so take the rental and fertile eggs and feeding costs of the chicks into consideration and compare it the price of purchasing a POL for $15+

My first hens were day old chicks from the pet shop at $4 each I used a large box with a lamp $o as I had the lamp so the only extra cost was the power for the light but that was very little I guess maybe $5 so the hens worked out at about $4.60 each so it was far cheaper than $16 for full growns and the hens turned out so friendly

The only drawback is you have to wait 17+ weeks for any eggs but they will bond better
