Rescue Geese

I am getting some geese from animal welfare. I have no idea of their age. How long do you recommend keeping them in the cage/shed before they are allowed to free range? and also do you recommend worming them when I get them? if so what product do I use.
Sorry heaps of questions, the last geese I had when I lived with my parents and they were only free range never fed any grains, or housed over night.

The first thing you do is clip one wing = most ‘rescue geese’ can fly – keep them confined in a small paddock or yard for at least 1 month making certain they have more than adequate feed – grass preferred but grains and/or pellets [chook] are fine for this short amount of time
Most geese actually like to be housed overnight [secure feeling I guess] and it is easy to train them to walk to bed each night
Geese rarely need worming but you can use most poultry wormers if you really want to – I use Cydectin pour on [produce store and not cheap] at the rate of 0.1ml per kg of body weight – just make sure if you use this that they do not go swimming for 2 days to allow it to soak fully into the skin

Once they are comfortable living with you start letting them roam a little bit into a large paddock = once they are fully bonded with your place they will only require grass grass and more grass with the rare occassinal treat of grain

Thanks so much for the helpful reply. i have been told the wings are clipped. Hopefully they will settle in well.

I got 2 geese from the rspca almost 2 years ago and they settled in so quickly and yes I was told to clip a wing

I have had geese for about 10yrs now. No special breed just Emdens and Toulouse. I have acquired the occasional one or two and never had their wings clipped. I guess they felt safe or something. Anyway I had a girl stray in a year ago and she just stayed. It took her a couple of weeks to get used to me and now she has had a gosling. She can fly ok but doesnt seem to need to. I only have wire fencing so she could have gone anytime. The same as the 5 I got just before she came along They stayed and are quite happy here. I never clipped their wings either.

I know and agree with the fact that rescue geese may be good fliers and agree also that it might be best to clip wings in your case.

Mine get coarse mixed grain and any scraps the chooks get. Also the grass in their 1/2 acre they all share.

Good luck and enjoy the geese. The eggs taste fine if you take a couple when they start to breed.

I rescued 2 drake muscovy's after all the floods and they are fantastic and they settled in after a couple of days
