Hello,

I suspect one of my chooks has gape worm, showing all the symptoms, so was informed that the best treatment is FLUBENVET. Does anyone out there know if it is available here in Australia, if so,would appreciate the address or link. Have wormed her with Avitrol Plus two weeks ago and she needs another dose, but I understand that Flubenvet is specifically effective on gape worms.

Thanks guys,

Hi Chook Lassie,

I see you've been surfing the net again and looking at overseas websites!!

Flubenvet is not available in Australia. It is a benzimidazole wormer containing flubendazole, which is related to fenbendazole ( Panacur) and oxfendazole (Wormout gel/tablets). It is a general wormer and not specific just for gapeworm.

If you reuse your avitrol and direct dose it to the infected bird then it should do the trick. Otherwise any of the better bird wormers should work- but not piperazine.

By the way how do you know it has gapeworm?

Cheers

Parvo

Hi Parvo,

She is constantly opening her mouth and has a squeaky cough and is off her lay. I think my rooster has it too, so I will as you have suggested, medicate them directly through their mouths. I was informed that to be sure, one can slowly twirl a Q tip into their throat and slowly twirl it out again and if there are little red threads on the tip, then it is gape worm. What do you think? thinkerg.gif thinkerg.gif

The gapeworm usually lives in the windpipe so unless you place your swab there you may not find them.
It may be gapeworm, but may also be a bacterial or viral or even fungal respiratory disease.
It may be worth placing them on a tetracycline- based antibiotic in the water at the same time.
