Hi RJJ:

Glad you like swans. If anyone is interested, there is going to be an International Swan Symposium in Easton, Maryland on February 3-6th. We will be presenting a paper regarding our Pink Feather Syndrome in Swans during the Symposium. The Symposium attracts swan specialists from throughout the world. Sheila Bolin, The Regal Swan

Hi Dave:

Your friend might try placing a post for Mute Swans at (www.stanley-park-swans.com). Ask the Swan Specialist. This is a worldwide post and you might find someone in Australia, New Zealand or close by that might be able to help. Sheila Bolin, The Regal Swan Foundation, Inc.

Are all swans pinioned at birth or can they be done at any age?

Hi OldGoat07:

Cygnets should be pinioned between 1-3 weeks of age. There is no anesthesia required as the bones, blood vessels and nerves in general are not developed. Anytime after this age, anesthesia must be used and can be detrimental to the swan's health if the veterinarian is not experienced in swan care, gives the improper dosage or wrong type of anesthesia. Even if everything goes well, there are no guarantees that the bird will survive. We have used anesthesia many times with the majority of times, very successful. However, even under the best of care, we have had swans die during pinioning as well as other surgical procedures.

Generally, the longer you wait to perform the pinioning procedure, the harder it is on the birds Many states and countries require that captive swans be pinioned so to protect the bird from flying into buildings, vehicles, going into ponds or lake with predators such as alligators, coyotes, bobcats, etc., as well as prevent feral populations that can cause not only hybrid populations, but illnesses that can cross between wild and captive birds.
