I've never heard of using sugar cane, sounds interesting. I do not know the consistency - my only concern would be that it would get impacted if they tried to eat it. I use fake turf and it works great.

At least 12 months but you need to take it out and clean it every couple of months and use a disinfectant mixed with warm water

I tried it and it was a mess in a few weeks I ended up with good old hay and you just chuck it on the garden when its stuffed

Whatever I can get my hands up here, organic sugar cane mulch, lucerne/oaten hay (only for the nesting box), straw, it all goes back out on the garden, the roses have never looked better :-D

I do sprinkle the base of the box with Pestene and cover it with the above litter and clean out their night poo each morning as the girls roost in there.

Mine do the same but its good all the poo is solid so easy to pick up and dont mess the eggs like if it was runny poo

my dad used to get shredded paper from his work, if it doesn't go to us it usually gets wasted in rubbish..
