I to brought one about 18 months ago and it also did nothing but give them a place to sit :shock:

There you go, this link has a very smilar item, see the black one in the picture. You should be able to knock one up from PVC fitiings etc. Full grown male Norway Rats can easily get under the high spots on corrugated iron roofs. I have witnessed this act a few times, and still find it amazing. It also means, a relatively small hole will allow a rat access to the poison inside the pipes.

Thanks, Jedcluckett! I've had a quick look at the second one, and will read them in more detail tomorrow and get something organised here. I definitely think the PVC pipe is the way for us to go as we have free-ranging chooks, small dogs and small kids that need to be kept away from any poison baits.

Thanks for the link. I am going to make a couple up as well. I make them out of bricks and pvc pipe but these look much better

Hi, i too have the same problem. My most successful ways off getting rid of mice and rats so far are

1. Getting a long bit of plastic pipe which is at least 5 inch wide, drilling a large whole in the middle which is then covered up with cardboard. then placing ratsack or eqivelent in it. that one the chooks can't get in but the mice and rats can

2. Get an old esky and fill it half way with water. Get a bit of meat, chicken, chocolate etc. I suggest a bit of chicken with pennut butter all over it. Hang the food a couple of inces above the water, i do this by attaching it to some string which is tied to the roof. then put a plank upto the top of the esky. the rats especially find that they have to get the food, they fall in and drown.

I have 4 cats patrolling the area, 2 are retired from rodent control however the large one still chases off feral cats.
2 are active and the best mousers anyone could ever hope for.
All the cats grew up being accustomed to having the birds around. I have chicks run freely in the yard and the cats barely take notice of the poultry anymore.

They don't stop mice however they have a major impact on keeping their numbers under control.
The rest, I leave traditional mouse traps baited with peanut butter bread every now and again to catch the extras. They are a quick and painless method of desposing of the pest.

I have 2 pet rats so ultrasonic methods are our of the question - they really do make charming pets, and are quite intelligent, baring very little resemblence to their pest relatives.
Baiting should be used with caution of you have cats or dogs as pets or children, I personally don't like having it around.

So then I used tallon to kill them which cost as much as the electric thing :roll:
